ok so i got a 30gb ipod video 5th generation from a mac user. problem is i have a pc. i cannot get i tunes to recognize the ipod so that i can reset it to fat32 format and use it with my pc. i have looked at the apple site and it has been less than helpful.

if you have any suggestions please let me know. this thing has been frustrating the crap out of me all night long.

i don't know if you can convert it or not, but this is your problem right here:

Usually when you initially connect an iPod to a Windows machine, it prompts you to reformat to FAT32. They come from the factory with HFS, so if you're a Windows user, it converts it over before you get any music on there.

If that doesn't do it for some reason, you can get a computer running Linux to reformat it. Linux is capable of working with both HFS and FAT partitions. I'm not a Mac guy, but the same may also be true for OSx. I've used a Mac machine in the lab to fix a broken iPod before, so there is something to be said for that.

Lastly, try using TransMac. It's a Windows program that allows you to access HFS volumes. Idk if you can actually edit any partition information, but I know it's helpful if you want to recover any data off of it before you reformat to FAT.

Some of these might seem like pretty obvious questions (just checking, not trying to be a jerk). What version of Windows (you know it only works with XP and maybe now Vista right)? Are you sure the USB port is good on your system? Is the software version up to date on it?

anyone know when the 6th gen ipod is coming out? I've heard a few people mention the beginning of April and that the new ipod will be a true video ipod with touch screen. I don't want to buy a 5th gen if the 6th gen is getting ready to come out

i am running xp, and to the best of my knowledge all three usb ports work fine, at least on any other usb device ive plugged in. i also deleted the drivers for the usb ports and reloaded them incase something had been corrupted.
