Well, e30ncsu, if all the bystanders had been armed they could have interceeded on the mans behalf against the police. The phrase "Leave that man alone" comes to mind.
An armed citizenry implies more than just armed victims, it also implies armed bystandards capable of banding with and upholding the rights of potential victims. 3/29/2007 8:56:27 PM |

not that the cops were in the right, but the blog really glossed over the details of the biker gang
they also failed to mention that he was housesitting for another gang member who had been arrested the previous day on weapon and drug charges 3/29/2007 11:18:44 PM |

^^I imagine there would be more raised eyebrows under those circumstances.
It's a lot easier to plant a weapon on a black man than it is a white man and get away with it. Do you disagree with that? 3/30/2007 6:52:34 AM |

I think it's more likely to happen to a black guy... But I don't think that's because it'd be easier to get away with.
I think the issue of the notion of planting a gun is hurting the conversation though, it's not a reasonable amount of force to exert on a man who is guilty or innocent. (Having reason to believe he was preparing to flee does not constitute justification for lethal force) 3/30/2007 7:38:43 AM |

if this writer claims he was killed as part of a conspiracy or for the wrong reasons, I want to hear his reasoning for why they did. I dont doubt the possibility that he was killed unjustly, but 2 squads of police certainly did not rally together to kill a random person. 3/30/2007 9:13:12 AM |

I disagree. Can you imagine the shitstorm it would cause if the cops were found to have planted a gun on an unarmed black man who they shot to death? As it is, these cops supposedly planted pepper spray and a switchblade, but that's barely a footnote in this story.
If the victim had been a black guy, major media would be all over this story like flies on dogshit.3/30/2007 9:27:28 AM |

Not as a conscious action, but as the result of bad factors: 1) Cops are typically paranoid and 2) Overarmed and 3) have legal invulnerability - "I swear I feared for my life, we all did, that's why we tazed him three times, then shot him dead while still seizing" - they don't have to justify the fear, just claim they had it. And there ya have it - a man dead for the crime of being affected by a taser gun.3/30/2007 11:52:27 AM |

Nobody is gonna argue that they were in the ballpark of being in the right. They were in a different town playing a different sport.
But I'm sorry, that article had to have left out a lot.
Quote : | "2 squads of police certainly did not rally together to kill a random person." |
Exactly. I agree that paranoia or even old-fashioned sadism led them to taze and cap the guy, but I have a feeling that somewhere out there we could find some information that would at least partly explain why they came in such force.
Maybe they had been fed inaccurate information regarding who the guy was, or what was going on at the house that might have led to the reasonable expectation that so many guys would be necessary. Hell, maybe those cops are all dirty as hell and this guy was presenting a problem to them. I can accept that the police were incompetent, misinformed, overly paranoid, or just as dirty as dirt based on what this story presented. What I have a little more trouble with is that there is some sort of shadowy government effort to establish a police state.
And the "death squad" line -- please. Even death squads don't just assassinate random people and at the very least they don't start with the most minor "enemies of the state." The dead guy might have been a man of sterling character, but either he was into something or they really, really thought he did, and I'm willing to bet they had at least some reason to (even if it proved false).3/30/2007 12:43:16 PM |

I would be willing to bet that the VAST majority of routine traffic stops results in absolutely nothing bad happening to the cops, making what happened to Megaloman the result of some idiotic power-hungry pig, rather than reasonable caution.
