Congrats on your new coach, Michigan.
http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10106001
Quote : | "ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- As first reported by CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer Gary Parrish on Monday night, Michigan on Tuesday hired John Beilein to coach its men's basketball team.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school wants Beilein to have the opportunity to inform his Mountaineer players that he's leaving before Michigan publicly announces the hiring.
West Virginia player Darris Nichols said Beilein planned to meet with his players Tuesday.
Beilein will be introduced at a news conference on Wednesday in Ann Arbor, the person close to the program said.
Media reports linked Beilein with the Wolverines just days after he led the Mountaineers to the National Invitation Tournament championship. It will cost Michigan $2.5 million to buy out Beilein at West Virginia, plus perhaps about $1 million a season in a multiyear contract.
Beilein's West Virginia teams made deep runs in the NCAA tournament the previous two seasons. Despite graduating their top four scorers from a year ago, the Mountaineers went 27-9, including a 78-73 win over Clemson in the NIT title game on Thursday.
The 54-year-old Beilein, under contract through the 2011-12 season, earns at least $740,000 per season with annual increases of $20,000.
He takes over for Tommy Amaker, who was fired last month following six seasons without an NCAA tournament appearance.
Wherever he's coached, Beilein has been a success, taking teams without great talent to five NCAA tournaments and six NIT appearances in 29 seasons. His 1-3-1 defense gives opponents fits and his offense ranked second in the country with 10 3-pointers made per game this season.
In only one of his five previous coaching jobs has Beilein stayed more than five years. He spent nine years at LeMoyne, then five apiece at Canisius and Richmond before coming to West Virginia, where he just completed his fifth season.
In 2005, after taking the Mountaineers to the NCAA regional finals, Beilein received a contract extension to derail a possible courtship from Virginia.
Last year North Carolina State came calling, but a $3 million buyout clause in Beilein's contract derailed negotiations.

Great hire. I'm surprised he left for that job. Beilein is a VERY GOOD coach. In the last three years he has a Sweet 16, an Elite 8, and a NIT Championship (with an incredibly young team). They'll be in the tourney in no time... much better than Amaker..
Huggins to WVU? He would've gone there last year if Beilein left. Does he spurn KSU for his alma mater after just one year? I bet WVU fans are pissed that he left this year and not last year...

Still, Michigan will probably see some level of success w/ Beilein over Tommy -- and who can blame a dude for taking $2.5 mil to leave the state of WV? 4/3/2007 4:25:49 PM |

^Easy, he lived on the AAU circuit after leaving Cincinatti, and didn't have to follow any NCAA rules since he wasn't a coach. Great example of NCAA rules leaving huge loopholes while focusing on the little stuff. 4/3/2007 5:02:09 PM |

Beasley said he would go wherever Huggins did and still has not signed a LOI at K State. For a guy with any sort of ethics I'd say he wouldn't leave... but this is Bob Huggins we're talking about. 4/3/2007 5:03:17 PM |

I'm guessing you think the Big East is a year in and year out better basketball conference than the ACC? Hilarious.....you should have at least 33% more teams in the NCAA field of 65, you have 33% more teams than the ACC. Now get back to burning couches to show your support for Belein and your disdain for yor incompetent Athletic Dept. for not chalking up some change for one of the better coaches in college basketball. However, I think Huggins would make a fine replacement, of course he'll bring his esteemed assisstant coach Jim Beam with him. I sure hope reciting his ABC's and counting backwards from ten aren't involved in his interview.4/4/2007 12:04:48 AM |

I love how the WVU boards are acting like WF is a lower tier basketball program. If Prosser leaves Wake for WVU, it is because Wake isn't interested in keeping him.*

I NEVER SAID THE BIG EAST HAS BEEN RUNNING SHIT ASSHOLE....HOWEVER ANYONE WHO THINKS THE ACC IS STILL THE BEST IS RETARDED.....THEY DID AWFUL IN THE TOURNAMENT EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD THE MOST TEAMS.....THE BIG EAST HAS 3 REALLY BAD TEAMS BUT OTHER THAN THAT TOP TO BOTTOM THEY ARE JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN THE ACC....THEY PROVE IT YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT....IT WAS BULLSHIT THAT TWO OF THEIR TEAMS (CUSE AND WVU) GOT SNUBBED FROM THE TOURNEY THIS YEAR WHEN TEAMS LIKE STANFORD GET IN.....4/4/2007 2:35:22 PM |

so other than what is ~25% of a standard conference (not a 16 team conglomerate), you're the best conference top to bottom? great point.4/4/2007 2:41:05 PM |
markgoal All American 15996 Posts user info edit post |
The ACC was certainly lacking the elite caliber teams this year, but still had the most good teams of any conference as usual. The ACC is consistently the standard by which all other conferences are measured.
The Big East has some very good teams, but also pad their 16 team conference with crap teams. If the ACC wanted to be like the Big East, they would just add 4 teams from the CAA or A-10 for basketball. 4/4/2007 2:43:50 PM |

I guess you mean teams actually in the tournament. Well, the Big East has what, 16 teams in their conference for basketball? Maybe the NCAA thinks that with so many teams, it's pathetic if you can't get in to begin with when teams with 11 and 12 teams have more potent teams. Serioulsy, a conference that has 16 teams gets less teams in than a conference with 12 teams, especially when the team conf. with 12 teams had what they consider a down year and the Big Least is still better?4/6/2007 11:06:53 AM |
