Why would Nathan Fillion do this show? It looks so bad. Plus if it's a race across the US, how long could they drag that out? 4/6/2007 3:14:23 PM |

Ive heard its a lot different than the promos make it look, but FOX is pushing it to the "Fast and the Furious" type crowd. Also, the promos that show the cheezy looking driving scenes (where its obvious its fake) arent cut from the finished product, but rather elements...the finished product should look as good as any other modern car driving scene (should).
It looks bad, yeah, but everything Tim Minear has done (that Ive seen) has been great...Angel, Firefly, Wonderfalls, The Inside.
AICN deems it FOXs best new series in years, which means it will probably be cancelled by next month: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32292 (spoilers). 4/15/2007 5:42:42 PM |

If its a good character based show then just about any premise can be made to work. I'll give it a few more episodes at the least. (Not to imply that Prison Break or 24 fit that mold, I don't know why either of those persists).

seems like a lot of these shows really should be following the BBC formula for making shows, where they (sometimes? often?) purposefully plan to make x number of shows, or x seasons, right from the beginning, instead of attempting to draw the shows out for as long as possible, as long as they're making money.
Ricky Gervais has a quote about that somewhere - for his reasons for wanting to make the original The Office only 2 seasons long. Since he had a fixed number of shows to work with, the was able to introduce some story lines (Tim/Dawn), make them interesting, and wrap them up exactly how he wanted to as the show went off the air. While I love The Office (US), it certainly does look like it's going to suffer (already is, actually) from Jim/Pam fatigue. With the US's open-ended commitment to making the show as long as possible, story lines inevitably have to be killed and introduced to keep things fresh.
But can you imagine a show getting a green-light at a major studio in the US where the producer comes in and says "hey, we have this great idea - we want to film 16 episodes, earn a lot of money, then go off the air completely, and you can find something else to fill our spot next season!" 4/16/2007 2:08:51 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
^you right.
or atleast know when you need to wrap the show up. The Wire for example is entereing its last season (5) and the writers and producers have said this is it. There are no other storylines that they feel would be quality enough to continue on. 24 is jumping the shark along with many many others. And certain shows (black donnellys imo) aren't getting the chance they deserve. 4/16/2007 2:14:41 PM |

It's easier for the BBC to respect that kind of creative integrity as they are...a government funded corporation and don't have to worry about ad-revenue.
Sadly most show writer's/creators do start out with a set story arc in mind, for most of them the problem is usually getting enough episodes to tell the story they want. If you're making a pilot that may or may not get picked up "Well what are we going to do in Season 8" is not high on the list of priorities, its more like "What are we going to do if we have to do this in half a season". If they do get to where its running long its hard to say no when people are throwing money at you and you want to establish credibility for future projects.4/16/2007 5:09:37 PM |

Daybreak was supposed to be a self-contained season...of course ABC couldnt even finish airing all of those. Im sure they would have brought it back for a "Day 2" if it had succeeded, but the plotline was supposed to wrap up at the end of the season.
Katie Finneran shows up as Tullys sister...the Tully family is becoming the Whos Who of past Minear projects. Tully passing all of those people after being off the road for so long, that was a little out there though...hot fucking ride though.4/16/2007 9:53:03 PM |

This whole show will be a who's who of past Minear/Whedon projects...just like all past Minear/Whedon projects...
My favorite so far was Jubal Early as the FBI? Agent investigating the wife's dissappearance. That first scene with him and Nathan was great I thought. Somehow I think they'll be more to this.
Also I thought this episode was lightyears better than the "2-Hour Premiere", I'm surprised they didn't show this episode first and then go back 3 months later and show the premiere right before they canned it. 4/17/2007 11:00:19 AM |
