I have to take a physics sequence and I just wanted to know what the difference between taking 201/202 and 205/208 was. Is one supposed to be harder than the other or what? Thanks!

doesnt it really depend on your major? isnt 205/208 required just for engineering?

For math majors you can choose

I may be mistaken, but the 205/208 sequence is calculus-based while the other isn't. Which means probably more theoretical (205/208) in the derivation of the concepts.

Btw, 208 was one of the best courses I have taken at State in terms of subject matter. Electricity and magnetism blew my mind (I should've been an EE) but it got a little stale with optics.

^^^^you're thinking of PY 211/212 vs. 205/208. 205/208 vs. 201/202 have calculus....

http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/reg_records/crs_cat/PY.html

So, in this case, it just depends on you major.

it all depends on how much you like physics

211/212 is much much easier than 205/208 even though 205/208 is really easy anyway

Do people seriously not read the thread?

Liked zapped102 said, it's probably best to go with 201/202 since it is specifically for PAMS majors.

I believe 201/202 is for physics majors. You should expect actual thinking in those as opposed to the cook-bookery of the py 205/208 sequence. Better students usually also. And possibly no webassign. With 205/208 you will have webassign I'm about 99.9% sure.

I second the cook-bookery, I felt like I did not learn much besides a few formulas before the tests....

Her accent can be quite entertaining, I had her for 205 last semester, and now for 208. She gives as many extensions on webassigns as you need

I had Ramakrishnan for 212 a couple of summers ago. She was great, easy A.

I took the 205/208 sequence, this sequence is typically for your engineers and physical science majors I absolutely hated the way Ramakrishnan taught in 208, she did a terrible job explaining things and her accent only made things worse. I had Sheerwood for 205, not even sure if he's still around, he wasn't bad at all, he was really excited about teaching the material unlike Ramakrishnan.

i took Daniels for 205m last semester...easily the worst teacher/instructor i have ever had in anything. Everything that was taught in class dealt absolutely nothing with tests, quizzes, or webassign. Not very helpful either when going to talk to her in her office either. Stay away from this woman at all costs.
