I think the article misses the point. Most people already agree that cell phones probably won't destroy the avionics. The fact that companies are starting to build picocells that can be placed aboard aircraft so that people can use their phones is evidence of this.
No, the BIGGEST reason why it hasn't happened yet is because the airline employees and customers both do not want it. Passenger after passenger has written the FAA that they want peace and quiet on their flights, and both the pilots and flight attendant unions don't want to deal with those irate passengers as they yell into their phones. The network issue is one as well, but I think that's a smaller issue, and most cellular carriers will go along since it'll give their customers more time to use their phones, especially with the pico cells (which they can charge a premium for). 4/9/2007 8:41:15 PM |

unlike a bus or restaurant, you're generally stuck on a plane for a MUCH longer time. while im annoyed by phones in the previously mentioned locals, it is tolerable. planes wouldnt be. 4/9/2007 8:45:05 PM |

I am a rebel, I've turned my cell phone on whilst in flight. When you get up to cruising altitude you don't actually get signal. So whether its on or off is mostly irrelevant, for most of the flight you don't get a signal anyway. 4/9/2007 9:13:48 PM |

train isn't the main source of transportation in America... While Subway is big in large metropolitan area's, there aren't that many cities with that kind of infrastructure or a large enough population density compared to Europe or Asian countries.
Most modern cell phones do have the "airport mode" that disables the signal so you can still use the features. I know I depend on the cell phone as my clock. 4/9/2007 11:51:10 PM |

thank god...
also, do you really think you're gonna get signal at 35,000 feet over a wheat field or a ocean?
only time I've been allowed to use one on a plane is when we where stuck in ground traffic at the airport, proved to be useful as it caused a hour and something delay...4/13/2007 1:02:14 PM |

^^most can jump to port 80.
plus, with GAN (previously known as UMA) the airlines/cell providers are going to want to let you to use it. since they can still charge you $$ 4/14/2007 9:30:24 PM |

I'd rather ban little babys/kids than cell phones. Those suckers get annoying. Usually, it's too loud on a plane for me to even hear someone next to me talking (unless you always ride first-class like an elite liberal). Sometimes I purposely don't "pop" my ears so that I'll have a harder time hearing. 4/14/2007 10:26:36 PM |

& they kinda do. If you are unable to control your child or keep them quiet for preflight Delta will ask you to leave the plane. My gf went up to PA a couple weekends ago and they asked a woman to leave the plane because she couldn't control her 2 kids screaming. 4/14/2007 11:22:07 PM |
