I hope those are just rumors because it would be a very BAD move for App State across the board. They are better off being a national power in football (Div 1 AA) then to forever have the Mid Major monicker attached to them...

i dont understand the need for such a large, fancy press box for them. From what I know with my sister going there, they overcrowd the stadium and temporary bleachers are brought in sometimes. Why not expand the seating before adding the fancy/expensive press box?

i agree about the press box...in fact, I was a little upset that we (NCSU) went for such a large press box instead of expanding our stadium more than we did. I remember hearing something about our options being:
a) build huge press box and a smaller north endzone
or
b) Build a smaller press box and a bigger north endzone 4/10/2007 1:46:57 PM |

Ohio State has long since removed the track from Ohio Stadium. It was removed around 1999/2000. So around 7 or 8 years ago. Years after the track and field programs moved out of their and Ohio Stadium was up for renovations and expansion, the track was removed. The field was lowered 14.5 feet and more seats at the bottom were added.
Here's a trivia question for you all. Which stadium was the first to add seats by building downward (i.e. remove the track, and lower the field), rather than the much more common way of expansion by building upward?

It was still there went I went to see us play them in 2003. I remember the OSU players made a point to catch NC State players who ran off field, to keep them from hitting the track and falling.
at first, I was like "wtf are they doing grabbing our players???" but the the OSU fans told me why they did it...4/10/2007 3:44:55 PM |

i'm no expert, but i think it's based mainly on attendance. i know you can lose your I-A status if you're average attendance over 3 years drops below 10,000, or something.

Well I do know that Ohio Stadium still has some kind of red surface that resembles a track, but that may just be what was left when they took it out. Rather than completely dig it out, they just left it.
Here's a hint to the trivia question. When the Idaho Vandals made the move up to Division I-A they called this stadium home for five years, until the NCAA changed the Division I-A average attendance requirement. 4/10/2007 3:53:50 PM |

in addition to attendance like ^^^ said, there are other factors for going to 1-A that ASU and/or Boone don't meet. They were considering the move up to 1-A a couple years ago, even before they were a "national powerhouse". I think the school has to have access to at least 2 four-lane highways leading into the town, or an interstate going through or near the town. Boone doesn't meet that requirement. Highway 421 was just widened to 4 lane all the way from Boone to Winston-Salem where it meets I-40 in 2003 or so. And the other highway, 321, is still two lane most of the way from Lenoir all the way through Blowing Rock. It's not scheduled to be fully 4-lane until at least 2014 or 2015, and probably later with construction delays.4/10/2007 3:56:43 PM |

ASU does not have the money or the resources to go D-1. They are not even looking at it. I would like to know where and how these rumors got started. I have inside sources at ASU and they are fine with their level right now.4/10/2007 4:26:39 PM |

A 1AA school will never be one of the top sports schools in the state. And for basketball, they have to compete with Charlotte, Davidson and UNC-W as well as the ACC schools. There's no big advantage there.
And for being "second fiddle" academically, they'd have to outdo State, UNC, Duke, Wake, Davidson (at least four of those five, just to be in 2nd place)...also not buying it.
They had pretty good basketball and football teams this year for the level they compete at. Let's not blow this out of proportion.4/10/2007 4:49:23 PM |

Idaho plays in a dome, Kibbie. I have a friend who played there in Moscow.4/10/2007 5:07:42 PM |
Brass Monkey All American 13560 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah they play in the Kibbie Dome now, but during the five years after they moved up to Division I-A they played in another stadium to keep their average attendance up above the minimum requirements that the NCAA had, until they changed the requirements.
Here's another hint. This stadium replaced the Rogers Field, which had caught fire on April 4, 1970. Rogers Field had wooden stands and was burnt down by an arsonist that was never found. There were many suspects and some even thought it was a conspiracy so that the school could replace the outdated facility.
