yeah, i drove both and was thinking about the same thing about the fj not being as good off road, but obviously wasnt allowed on the test drive. i was thinking the 4 door jeep just cause of usability, but didnt know if there were any major problems anyone knew about

A few years ago the Wrangler was tied with the Tacoma for best resale value of all major production vehicles sold in the US. I don't know how the Unlimited is doing, but Wranglers hold their value very well.

Jeep. FJ Cruiser is one of the ugliest vehicles on the road (which is a shame b/c the FJ 40 is such a cool looking vehicle)

seen a buncha FJ cruisers at uwharrie, look pretty good when you lift them, but dont know if they have the fancy sway bar disconnects the jeep does though.

^they don't.

they're both gay imo, but the fj cruiser is going to be the better vehicle for most people that don't spend any time off road.

FJ Cruisers are beasts off road, from what I've heard. But of course the Jeep is too. FJCs look pretty cool in my opinion. But the Rubicon is pretty bad ass. I would go with the FJ because of Toyota, the uniqueness, and the heritage...if anyone gives a shit about that lol. Actually I don't really care either.

In that sense, yes.
But maybe beast was the wrong word. I was going by C&Ds review. Knowing them, they probably did review it with a Camry in mind.

yeah, i've never understood car magazines reviewing 4wd's. that'd be like four wheeler or 4 wheel and off road reviewing the latest cars or something.

yeah, for a what it is the fj cruiser does okay. nothing special though. the wrangler, especially the rubicon, would likely run circles around it on most east coast stuff.

it was heavily rumored the the new wrangler would be ifs. seems like the concept model was even ifs, but i can't remember.

fyi, some ifs suspensions can and will have what amounts to a control arm. that's no sure fire way of telling anything.

you are correct though, they are still slinging coil sprung danas under them.

if you want a mall cruiser that will be a better daily driver, get the FJ (or better yet, a CAR, which will do a much better job of being a car than any truck will).

if you want off road capability and the ability to strip off the top and doors in minutes, and are willing to put up with the less endearing qualities as a daily driver (which have been ironed out to a noticeable degree since the days of the CJ and even the YJ), get the Jeep.

Jeeps have killer resale value. Mine was very reliable, except the AX-5 tranny (manual trans behind the 4cyl), which is a known problem. My little brother's Camry grenaded its engine at like 100k miles or something...go figure. Toyota usually makes long-lasting, reliable stuff, but I wouldn't worry too much about the Wrangler. The Rubicon particularly is somewhat overbuilt.

yeah, i think mine popped at around 115k or something. i was just cruising at a steady speed (as fast as it would go--about 82-82 mph...haha) on the interstate, and had a catastrophic 5th gear failure.

I was headed back to base up in Quantico from a weekend home in Raleigh...I never even stopped--just shifted down into 4th and kept going.

^^i've got an nv4500 for you.

that was his dad's fj. i think he told me he had like 40k in the restoration or something ridiculous. sold it on ebay for some crazy amount.

he already bought something for his. i actually am considering selling it. with what those things are bringing, i can get a 4 speed dirt cheap and put a nice dent in the price of a new 3 speed stak with the overdrive.

mine's a 4wd transmission though. he'd have to get a case to run it, or swap out the tailhousing/output shaft. it's also 23 spline output, which might not play nice with diesel pwr.

i need to holler at him about that eaton then, that thing would be sweet in the bus.

give him a shout then. i've been telling him to throw a case behind whatever tranny he gets. i'm sure he'd love the gear reduction, even if he doesn't have a front axle.

it's a remanufactured unit, has maybe 5k on it. i blew up the first one i swapped in, this is the free replacement i got under warranty. 5th gear nut has been addressed. it's always had castrol syntorq in it, which is NOT just regular synthetic oil like alot of people think and substitute some other brand of synthetic. then they trash the synchros.

if i sell it, i'll probably ask $1800 for it including the shifter, bellhousing, and a passenger drop 241 case. the bellhousing has a small hairline crack, but still works fine. i wheeled it hard a few times after it showed up and it hasn't gotten any worse. it could probably be welded if it bothered someone that much.

I'd be interested in that NV, but I can't afford that much. I'd like to still do the Eaton thing sometime, but right now I have neither funds nor a good place to work. And I really don't have any time. That's what sucks the most.

about the fj40s.. wow this is probz my longest tudb post

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$1st smurf blue fj40 u see picts of:

my dad bought that one in norther penn where the quakers live. took his fj80 up and i tagged along. it was a rust bucket. he did a frame off resto, new body panels everywhere pretty much. new interior blah blah well i guess that is all included in frame off. the only things it had going for it was the factory ac and 2f engine pretty much that was running good.

all he did to engine was header and weber carb. he let me drive it around for a lil then he sold the shit.

i thought he was gonna be cool and give to me for a high school grad present or some shit eventually.. nahhhh he sold this one to some ppl in va or some shit. it had the higher geared tranny and i think it was a 76 :beatup

the blue one i had the most fun with before the resto. he let me drive that shit everywhere.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
picts of 2nd fj40 (1979):

the picts of the one in my profile where it is all torn down was one that a guy started rebuilding it somewhere in north carolina. he put it for sale for like ~2500-3500 i think i dont remember. the engine was just fully rebuilt still all apart and the truck and almost all the new body panels.

he mostly boxed it together scrapped the bondo'd shittily tub and body panels, bought an aluminum tub lifted it put 4 wheel disc brakes on it off a denali or some crap and made the shit look pristine. i think he worked on it all the time for like 2 years. he put ac in it to i think

he sold that one on ebay for ~17,500 or something. he was so into them he fabricated power steering brackets for them and had a lil business going by word of mouth. the fjjunky guys or wahtever power steering brackets required loosening a head bolt which was causing guys to blow head gaskets apparently and my dad's bi-passed that. pretty cool he still sells the brackets

i think he was going to keep that orange one and that's why he made it so nice. he wouldnt even let me take it to school to pickup the girlies it had the lower geared tranny and it's top speed was around 65-70 whew it whined. (lookin back i was a dumb as 17 year old.. i wouldnt let my son drive it either. well probz with) he did let me drive it with him in it though

he probz sold it bc he realized how much he spent on it. he only made 2-3k off each truck and that's not including labor. but he enjoyed doing it. hell he painted the orange fj and it came out pretty good haha. i think he had to spray it twice bc he fugged up the first time (it was his first time painting and dust from the shop got on the paint)

Toyota was trying to buy it or something as a display model for the new fjcruiser that was coming out. but he had too much after market crap on it and it wasnt painted a factory color (orange).

i would love to own one, one day when my life is setup... but pretty sure that wont happen. i almost bought a minty lookin one with a spun rod bearing but i bought the 600rr instead which serves me much better being a p00r college student.

i have picts of the orange one somewhere. if anyone cars ill try to post.

it look the like perfect frat boy truck... but i mean whatever sells.

rubi- 4:1 case, e-lockers, electronic disco swaybar, removable top and doors. it has huge ugly rubber fenders and its a jeep

fj- rear e-locker, one of those offroad vehicle traction control mechanisms that does the driving for you, and IFS. however it is a toyota.

Rubi ftw offroad, toyota- reliability, resale value, etc.

for the 30+ you'll pay for each of these, why not build a beater for offroad and buy a car to dd. then put the rest of the $$$ in the bank.

the last option is definitely the best, in my opinion.

the jeep will murder the toy off road, though, and will be more fun, albeit more "painful" as a DD.

i don't think the jeep will lag the toy in resale value, though. jeeps have killer resale. could very well best the toy in that dept, i think.

i think a lot of the comparison between those two vehicles has been pretty objective.

that said, those two vehicles are only somewhat comparable.

furthermore, buying cars is an objective affair to Consumer Reports, but not to many people in the real world.
