What kind of studies are out there that haven't been funded by the food/drink industry?

Anyone have any reliable on how safe/unsafe aspartame is?

i don't remember the exact study, but, if you're referring to the carcinogenic effects of aspartame, i believe they were only proven to actually exist if you ingested massive (like, pounds) quantities of aspartame in a short period of time.

Essentially, it appears that aspartame is safe unless you're phenylketonuric.

From the guy at work

To mess up a rat they gave it enough that you woudl have to eat like 3 pounds a day every day, at least thats hwo he said it worked out on bodyweight.

Because we have soem hippies that believe that anyhing other than free range/backyard shit is going to kill you.

^it probably will. We won't know what half this shit that we have begun eating in the past 10-15 years does to the body until people our age get old.

Yea, but we will ceom up with new cool ways to fix the problems we create, free range chickens and farming wont feed 6 billion people.

And look at the positives, is it better to weight 300 pounds or have a little aspertame in your diet, i would say the fake sugar is better overall

Were all dieing, just a question of when.

I've always heard that, but I wonder if its an accurate account of the actual studies. I'm going to do a little research on this.

toemoss, when sombody decides to kill off 5 billion we can eat the chickens that grow in our back yards, but until then we have 6 billion, which if they are not fed, will start killing us down to feedable levels. Now if you have no problem with mass genocide, then this could work, but until then well be eating GM crops and other mass produced foods.

I have only one allergy, and that is aspartame... I get these massive hives/rashes on my trunk if I drink any diet sodas or eat anything with a noticeable amount of it in it. Weird allergy, but hey guess that is a medical side effect.

Rats are usually a lot more resistant to cancer and death than humans are, so it's hard to throw away the carcinogen studies on rats simply because they fed the animal a large amount.

The rumor I've heard from my health alarmist friends is that aspartame is probably safer than other
arificial sweeteners. For example, "Splenda" which claims to be just like sugar is apparently chemically very close to dioxin, and there have allegedly not been as many in-depth studies. That sounds believable given that Splenda is pretty new. They say that Splenda's nontoxicity was claimed on the basis of a study of several hundred male grad. students and that no long-term study has been done.

I personally find this amusing since the same people claimed I should throw out my sweet and low and use Splenda instead... whatever. I'm going to eat what tastes good, the habit of worrying about the latest health study is probably more damaging then ignoring them altogether. Anyway, its impossible to avoid "unhealthy" foods, I'm just happy I have food to eat and I'm not going to let a bunch of heath Nazis deny me that joy. Sorry for the rant.

diet drinks give me headaches, and they just taste nasty to me.

Also, aspartame apparently breaks down into parts that then form formaldehyde

Three chlorines, but yeah.

Because of those, a lot of it just passes right through you without being absorbed.

^again, there's no real evidence to back that up at this point.

you should slap the fuck out of your hippie friends for feeding you that line of garbage. there are almost no similarities between the two, and even if they were that would mean sugar is similar to dioxin. Also, sucralose has been available in Canada for well over a decade. It's only new to the states.

I did. Someone should tell that to the developing world, because so-called first world nations by and large have negative population growth by natural birth. The US is growing because of immigration, not birth rates.

All I know is that when I take in any significant amount of aspartame, it make my stomach cramp up and gives me some mad gas. It always made me feel really shitty when I was regularly consuming it in my diet sodas. Sucralose does not make my stomach hurt, AND makes a much tastier drink. I'll pick a diet soda with Splenda any day, and thats pretty much all I buy now. I dont care about the lack of long term studies, I care about how it makes me FEEL.

And on a side note, I was thinking about trying to make some sucralose in my lab.
