This is incorrect. If you are single and claim yourself you would only have to file NC if your income is greater then $5500. If you dont believe me check this link:

^i saw that in the nc tax booklet... the thing is this: i made less than $5500 last year. my federal taxable income came to $0, but by the ridiculous nc "additions to taxable income" worksheet that i had to do, i have to pay tax on more money than i actually made last year. now i don't know if i'm doing something wrong, or missing something, or what, but this doesn't seem right. i got all my money back from federal, but for some reason i owe the state almost $100, even though i didn't make enough money to file in the first place? can anyone help?? thanks 4/16/2007 12:26:50 AM |

i'm totally with you here, but i've heard that if you file federal, you have to file state... and since i apparently owe them money, i don't want to get raped by interest, penalties, etc, if i fuck up.... i'll still come out ahead, but it sucks nonetheless.
deadline is tomorrow. anyone else got advice?4/16/2007 11:57:09 PM |

If you are below the minimum filing threshold and you don't file . . . then you won't get back the money that you already paid in.

File for an extension and you won't have to worry about any penalties. If you don't then you most likely will.4/17/2007 11:58:46 AM |

You are doing something wrong. Not exactly sure but it has to do with your additions to federal taxable income.

You cant owe and be below the minimum threshold.

An extension is not an extension to pay. You will still be hit with interest and penalties. You will not, however, get hit with a late filing penalty.
