Quote : | " NEW YORK A new survey of 1,502 adults released Sunday by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that despite the mass appeal of the Internet and cable news since a previous poll in 1989, Americans' knowledge of national affairs has slipped a little. For example, only 69% know that Dick Cheney is vice president, while 74% could identify Dan Quayle in that post in 1989.
Other details are equally eye-opening. Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Colbert Report. They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot -- with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind.
Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly. Fox topped only network morning show viewers.
Told that Shia was one group of Muslims struggling in Iraq, only 32% of the total sample could name "Sunni" as the other key group.
The percentage of those who knew their state's governor dropped to 2 in 3. Almost half know that Rep. Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House and 2 in 3 know that Condi Rice is secretary of state. But just 29% can identify Scooter Libby, 21% know Robert Gates and 15% can name Sen. Harry Reid.
But nearly 9 in 10 knew about President Bush's troop escalation in Iraq.
Men scored higher than women, and older Americans did better than younger, on average. Democrats and Republicans were about equally represented in the most knowledgeable group but there were more Republicans in the least aware group. " |

The cleaning thing is a possibility. Women still do the lion's share of the domestic work. Add in a full-time job, and yeah, you do have less time than your male peers to stay informed. Furthermore, there are still plenty of women operating under the assumption that politics/current events is "man's stuff." In some instances, it's not even, "Oh, I'm just a woman. I need to know my place." It's more, "Silly boys and their games. Whether or not we go to war, I'm the one who holds things together around here."

^^ are you denying that TDS and TCR watchers are more informed as to who people in the government are than regular news show viewers? Whether you like the shows or not, or if you think they have whatever biases, you can't deny that after watching and paying attention to those shows for a week that you wouldn't be able to name most of the important people in the federal government, or at least the ones mentioned in the study. 4/16/2007 2:46:45 PM |

That doesn't make them the most informed. Them statistically answering the most questions correctly about basic political stuff makes them the most informed. I don't understand why you can't accept that people who enjoy political comedy/satire/humor (liberal or not) are going to be more informed about general politics than others.4/16/2007 3:31:28 PM |

most of the jokes on TDS start with a background to the situation....most of what they say is accurate, at least until the punch line anyway. I know there have been several times when TDS brought a subject that i wasn't aware of to my attention, and spurred me to research it more closely.
the best bits are when they show a clip of a politician saying x, then a more recent clip of the same politician saying the exact opposite.....no commentary even needed.
and, when stewart has a political guest, it's usually very informative and mostly serious.
most of the people that watch aren't looking for the show to be their primary news source. I think there is correlation, but the article may have misrepresented/misunderstood the relationship. 4/16/2007 3:46:12 PM |

really, most of the blurbs they published are meaningless without knowing the actual question or survey. e.g. there are a dozen ways to ask a question about Cheney. - Who is the vice president? - Who is Dick Cheney? - Who is this man? (show a picture of Cheney)
any of those questions could produce significantly different responses.4/16/2007 3:51:53 PM |

i understand that people who "get" the political humor of some of those shows apparently have some basic knowledge of who is in power and some current events
i guess its kind of what agentlion ^^ is saying...what questions did they ask? how did they determine what qualifies as being "most informed"
i mean people who have no cares at all about politics probably wouldnt watch TDS or TCR...i'd still think the MOST informed people took their news and politics more seriously than most viewers of TDS and TCR 4/16/2007 5:26:19 PM |

its not that complicated:
Quote : | " "who's the vice president"
"who's the secretary of state"
"who's the speaker of the house"
"who's the senate majority leader" " |
...
either you fucking know this shit or you don't.
...
fact is, Fox News Channel, with their sensationalist reporting and 5th-grade comprehension level, naturally appeals to the lowest common denominator.
along with their decidedly conservative slant, they also appeal to the people who are statistically speaking less educated than their liberal counterparts.
so... its no wonder that so many of that group cant answer basic questions about the federal government. they dont know because they dont need to know.
all they need to know is that "Libruls are teh evil" and "I din' come from no damn monkey!"
that you republican tools on TWW are generally educated and informed, makes you guys the OUTLIERS. not the norm.

actually in this poll the margin of error is 3.5%, so it does show a slight dip.
However, if you think about how often Dan Quayle was laughed at, versus how much time Dick Cheney spends hidden in a secret bunker even the 2% drop could be considered a non drop 4/16/2007 11:35:25 PM |

Twista, you are such a troll. It's ridiculous, dude.
All you do is attack liberals/liberal ideas, and you also post ridiculous "points" that no thoughtful person would ever consider--actually, I take that back...we all have stupid moments. But you have them continuously; there's no possible way you could be genuine with the bullshit you spew.
And another thing. You make a ton of assumptions about other people, and people are exhausted and exasperated and don't feel like correcting your childish assumptions so they argue within your assumptions. And the second they attempt to glean something about you, you are so goddamn quick to jump back and claim you're neutral or independent. It's like you won't call yourself a conservative, but you exclusively criticize everything liberal--there's a lot of users like this.
Rarely, you make these eloquent, incisive remarks...almost like there's another person using your account. Why can't you try for that more often? 4/17/2007 12:19:28 AM |
