for a migraine.
I asked the name, but all I can remember is that it started with a C. It was via IV, and worked VERY fast. Was at the ER. From Googling, I know it wasn't compazine.

not to flame or anything because I get migraine (serious ones) at least once a week. I have a prescription for it; it's a pill. But why go to the hospital for a migraine
V thats what I was gonna ask, but didn't want her to have to disclose more info

was it a general pain killer or a drug specifically for the migraine. If it was a general pain killer, it could have been codeine, but morphine seems to be the pain killer of choice for the ER... 4/30/2007 8:19:30 AM |

No, you're totally right to ask. I felt like a baby being there for a migraine, and I didn't go for the first migraine I had. I went because in addition to it, my neck was getting progressively stiff, and rapidly so. This was definitely a just-in-case visit. I also was having trouble talking and processing what was being told to me.
mcfluffle also nailed it. Supposedly, it's technically a migraine (so i've always heard) if it's just on one side of the head...well, i've always had one-sided headaches . This was something new and on a scale I'd never encountered, even with the really awful one I had ~6wks ago.
A very fair question
It was a migraine-specific drug. Dunno if it helps to know that a side effect is restlessness.
Looks like they use that as a preventive migraine treatment, and not an acute one. And that wasn't it.]4/30/2007 9:34:50 AM |

don't they have to list drugs on your patient records? 4/30/2007 10:53:06 AM |

The patient records you don't get?
I looked through all the literature they sent me home with, and I was a little shocked to see that it wasn't on there. It also wasn't very patient specific, though. Basically, 'we've listed the reason for you visit as this, and the output for the 'come back and visit us if...' field is [list of corresponding symptoms]'. Some of which were the reason I went in the first place. 4/30/2007 10:57:50 AM |

Migraine can be a disabling condition for the sufferer. For the small number of patients who fail home therapy and seek treatment in an emergency department, there are a number of therapeutic options. This paper reviews the evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of the following therapies: the phenothiazines, lignocaine (lidocaine), ketorolac, the ergot alkaloids, metoclopramide, the "triptans", haloperidol, pethidine and magnesium. Based on available evidence, the most effective agents seem to be prochlorperazine, chlorpromazine and sumatriptan, each of which have achieved greater then 70% efficacy in a number of studies.
any of those sound familiar?
call Rex's medical records dept and ask them to look up your meds on the MAR

See, it could be that, but I just don't think it is? I dunno how often ERs use meds for unapproved purposes. The amusing thing is that when I was in the psych ward when I was younger, they gave that a go on a PRN basis, and there was absolutely no effect. Each of the three hospitals tried it, the latter two ignoring my parents' warnings that it was not effective.

Uhhhh... 1) I'm in the minority by even caring then, and still caring after the migraine is gone 2) Last night, it didn't matter. Do you think trauma patients stop and ask before every addition to their IV what's going in them? It's one thing when you're not in a world of hurt and things are slow to do that, but it's not always feasible to know what you're being given.
I agree with you completely that it is ideal to always know what's being put in you, but you just can't always. I speak from experience on this one, both from last night, and when I was younger.
And you'd be shocked at how many people just don't care.
^only from frenetic googling and contexts not related to migraines
