It wasn't fallout 3 though.

It wasn't supposed to be a sequel nor was it even developed by the same studio.

[Edited on May 1, 2007 at 8:30 PM. Reason : instead of comparing it to godfather 3, you should compare it to the star wars christmas special]

so fallout 3 isn't fallout 3 then since it is being developed by bethesda, right? i mean if that's how you say it has to be for it to be considered the 3rd fallout game, this doesn't fit the bill

Black Isle Studios no longer exists, and therefore can't produce Fallout 3.

They did exist when Fallout Tactics was made.

Tactics was the third game produced with the Fallout name, but it was not part of the series and shouldn't be considered with the other two. Just like you wouldn't use Star Wars: Battlefront to judge the Jedi Knight series, don't use Tactics to judge the Fallout RPG's.

I hope to god they don't try to make it 1st/3rd person ala Oblivion. I love the isometric/bird's eye view and hope they keep it like that.

I've never played Fallout but everything I've ever heard has been good. What other game(s) would you compare it to? Sounds kind of like Diablo. If so how does it compare to other Diablo clones? Restricted Area (sucked)? Sacred (good, but buggy)?

Here's a video of where Black Isle made it to in Fallout3 before they went bankrupt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uuDKrY7eW0

Bethesda will be at e3 in June. We should learn more then.

Most info about Fallout3 we have so far:

Quote :
"First off I would like to quickly say that I am an artist at Bethesda. I worked on environmental art for Oblivion and I have now moved on more to effects and such for Fallout. For this reason, I will not be able to answer any questions about the gameplay mechanics or story of Fallout 3. This is simply because my view/opinion of the current state of these things would be incomplete, inaccurate and/or irrelevant.

Now that that is out of the way, I would like to say something about working here. We are not in the business of making games solely for other people. We do not make our decisions based of market research, trends, polls or other such nonsense; and our business folks, while very good at their jobs, stay almost completely out of the development process. (Hey, they sign the checks, so we have to at least tell them what we’re doing.)

We simply try to make games that we think will be fun to play. We want to play these games and enjoy them, and we want other people to like playing these games as well. If we were only in the business of making money we would be selling WWII football games for the DS. (And I wouldn’t really want to work here anymore.)

There are a lot of people here who are very passionate about Fallout and want to stay true to what made the first games great. Personally, I have only played a few hours of the first Fallout and very recently at that, so it would be wrong for me to claim any great fandom. (Before your head explodes please refer to the disclaimer about me not being in charge of story or gameplay design!) However, I have enjoyed what I have played for the most part. I like the setting and dialogue and I like how your skills affect you ability to communicate with people a lot. I don’t, however, agree with you on the combat system. To me, it feels like an excruciatingly slow Diablo. I don’t see it as being particularly more involving, just much, much slower. To each there own I suppose.

I’m sorry if you hated Oblivion. I will not preach that every facet of the game was perfect. I could, along with the 60 or so others immediately around me, offer a laundry list of things I wish were different about the game, but I know we are proud of it as a whole. And I also know that by any impartial measure (i.e., not my Mom and not the people on these forums) the game is enjoyed by the vast majority of people who play it. It is ok to have on opinion on the game and no one here is going to attack anyone who does not like it, but don’t assume that because you know five, ten, or even a hundred people who hate everything about Oblivion, you should get an apology from us.

Fallout will be very different from Oblivion and it will be a game that I guarantee we will not release until we are happy with it. Will you like everything about it? No, of course not. Will you like anything about it? I have no way to guarantee that for you, but that’s ok, because as stated earlier, we are not in the business of making games solely for other people."

No, no, no, god no.

It is nothing like Diablo, it's a story driven, open ended RPG with turn based combat and complex character development and no classes.

Diablo is an item collecting click fest action game disguised as an RPG.

If I had to compare it to anything it would be Baldur's Gate or Planescape: Torment.

while that guy is wrong about it being like diablo (both the behtesda guy and poster), it is too slow. im sure with the systems we have nowadays though we could speed up the animations a bit and lessen to bore. it was a fun game, just spice it up.

The death animations were a good speed, but he has a point about the speed. It wasn't so much the animation speed, it was the pauses in action.

In fallout it went kind of like this:

Click fire button

(pause)

Submachine gun fires for a moment

(pause)
...

Enemy explodes piece by piece into tiny gibs and collapses onto the floor as a pair of legs and bloody half of a torso.

i started fallout2, but got bored, cuz of its slow start. when i had stuff to do it was fine, but meh.

hopefully they speed it up a little bit while still giving it content. i dont want it to be like oblivion looks-wise or anything, but the speed fo that game was well done. plenty to do so you didnt feel bored, but you werent done with stuff right away (though the quick travel made it a little too quick at times). was the only non-mmo game that i played for 80hrs+

You could find them in a 2 pack at wal-mart for $10 around 2 years ago. I'm not sure if they are still there, but I'm sure you could find them somewhere.

I thought about getting it, even though I have them already, just as backups or to give to someone.

Yeah, FO2 really does have a slow start, especially if it's your first time playing the series.

Takes a little while before you even get a gun.

My problem with fallout 2 is the temple, I wish you could just skip it and let it give you a couple of levels.

I have played that game literally like 10 times, and punching ants in that temple gets old after a while.

one thing I hope for fallout 3 is something to make the melee and thrown weapons worthwhile. Hand to hand is much better currently, because the spiked power fist is as good as the super sledge, and there are multiple plot lines that have to do with hand to hand (boxing, martial arts in San Fran).

They did a good job big guns worthwhile in fallout 2. In the first one the only big guns you could find through most of the game was the bazooka and the flamethrower. The flamethrower kind of sucked and the bazooka had hard to find and expensive ammo. Eventually you would find a minigun, but it sucked compared to the energy weapons you could find. In fallout 2, the Vindicator minigun and the Bozar heavy machine gun are 2 of the best guns in the game. I've actually gotten over 1000 damage once using a Bozar, and I killed the final boss in 2 or three bursts of the Vindicator.

The big guns in FO aren't really that bad...the only real problem is the rarity until late in the game, but that applies to energy weapons too.

My party got straight massacred by a super mutant with a minigun when I tried to invade the cathedral.

this is especially true if you arent a strong character. if you are a ranged person or charismatic char you can die pretty easily if you are unlucky. maybe i'll go be a brute strength guy and try it again, but for now it was too slow (even though i played 1, just not all the way through cuz i got stuck).
