supposedly when there are 3 white officials versus 0 white officials, there are 0.12 - 0.20 more fouls called on black players

the counterargument could be do black referees call black players more leniently?

seemed like a pretty dumb study to me also

That wouldn't show anything conclusive. You could say:

1) White refs are clearly racist because they call non-fouls on black players

2) Black refs are clearly racist because they don't call fouls where they should on black players.

I prefer 3 - stop trying to create racial problems where none exist

or 4 - black and white refs alike don't call black or white players alike for traveling.

Maybe, possibly, perhaps, conceivably, perchance it's because white players are more likely to stand around the 3 point line and shoot, and also guard perimeter shooters, while less likely to challenge someone driving to the basket or go inside and bang around themselves.

This sounds a lot like studies that purport to show workplace discrimination because minorities or women are underrepresented in a certain field.

There are always more factors involved. You cannot just look at the results and say it proves discrimination is occuring. It's just as bad as looking at incarceration statistics and stating that a certain group is predisposed to crime.

The methodology (looking at boxscores) is suspect as well. Shoddy analysis all around by the authors of this study.

They looked at the box scores of the games, which don't show which ref called which fouls. That to me, makes the study unreliable.

Relatively speaking, the NBA has stronger variables. They have numbers on each individual referee. This "three white refs vs. no white refs" shit has holes everywhere.
