is there a easier way to just re-encode a divx file so that it strips it of its divx compression and recompresses it with an encoder windows can read by default? 5/9/2007 4:48:21 AM |

360 ONLY plays WMV...you need to convert everything to WMV
or try using tversity which will encode on the fly 5/9/2007 11:06:32 AM |
f1001978 Veteran 315 Posts user info edit post |
It will only play WMV with media connect (WMP 11, Zune). But, it will play WMV and MPEG-2 with XP-MCE (with the rollup 2 update) and Vista-MC. I use the Transcode 360 with XP-MCE, and it works great.

since the xbox wireless card is limited to B/G. would it be best to hardwire the router to the xbox and use a wireless card on the PC? something thats good for streaming HD content. Right now i've got the pc hardwired and the xbox wireless with the router in the office. 5/9/2007 10:44:15 PM |
f1001978 Veteran 315 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, that part got me the first time also. They recommend hardwired PC and wireless 360 (So you'll buy the $90 adapter). I have my 360 hardwired directly to my PC and use a shared internet connection, no bottlenecks here. Also, the 360 adapter is A/B/G, they say A is the best (less stuff uses the 5GHz band). 5/9/2007 11:08:25 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
oh yeah it is A. well would i be better off just picking up a a/b/g router and keeping my PC hardwired? I don't have the option of hardwiring both because the xbox is downstairs in the living room and the computer is upstairs in the office. Perforamance is pretty good no lag really, except every now and then the picture freezes and skips ahead a few seconds although i'm starting to think thats due to the transcode360 since it didn't do that when i converted over to WMV. 5/9/2007 11:10:51 PM |
f1001978 Veteran 315 Posts user info edit post |
You can lower the bit rate that Transcode outputs a little to lighten the network load if need be. A A/G router would be best, kick the B leaches to the curb. 5/9/2007 11:16:17 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
I was thinking of getting the WRT350N by linksys. ITs a draft-n/A/B/G router with gigabit support, so i'd at least be able to run gigabit from my pc to the router and the bottlenecking would be in the router itself. whats A's transfer rate? 5/9/2007 11:19:27 PM |
f1001978 Veteran 315 Posts user info edit post |
It's max rate is 54Mb/s like G, but it uses the 5GHz band where there's less "traffic" so your less likely to get slowdowns. That sounds like a good router.

renaming the file to .avi makes the mkv files show up on the xbox now however when i transcode it there is a huge delay in audio to the video. plays very smooth, sound is great just not in sync. 5/11/2007 1:02:59 AM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
i've always had problems with MKV files, xbox or not. Same issue too, sound sync problems. I either found a driver setting or downloaded some secondary program to alleviate it, but I ended up just ditching the format. 5/11/2007 1:14:51 AM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
damn...cause i have a few mkv files on hand already. I guess i may as well stick to what works. its not like i can really notice a difference and storage wise, ~300mb vs. 1gb for a one hour long tv show is huge.
couldn't find any solutions on the transcode forums or any other forum that comes up through google. everyone is posting problems and no solutions lol

^Dude you're missing the whole point of the thread. Apple TV is not a new idea. Windows media center has been out for years, and i'm currently recording OTA HD on Vista. Apple TV IS A WASTE OF MONEY.
Reasons why APPLE TV SUCKS BALLS. 1. only play up to 720p 2. Content has to be in certain formats to play on the Apple TV (xbox or media center will play anything) 3. Supports less file formats than itunes (downgrade) 4. similar copyright issues as an ipod 5. Got a piece of shit Go 7300 in it. 6. have to pay 300$+ for a small HD 7. No expansion options after the HD fills up 8. Dolby Digital 5.1 support sucks 9. HD support sucks 10. NO BUILT IN DVR???????? 11. No on/off button (system is known to get hot, because you can't shut it off) 12. it's apple
Be Smart. Don't support apple.

I don't care if someone comes to my house and sets it up for me, if the features suck, and it can't do jack, then i'm still not going to buy it. 6/25/2007 4:32:37 PM |

"sync through walls." -apple.com OH WOW PEOPLE WE CAN HAVE A WIRELESS NETWORK THROUGH A WALL!!!!
This must be some secret government technology!!!!
I hate how apple makes everything seem so polished and new. When in reality Apple is usually the LAST company to come out with something. For example they were one of the last to come out with a HD based mp3 player, dead last in coming out with tv tuners, and not even to mention late in coming out with about every single game (if they actually release it for mac).

Features
Apple TV connects to a television or other video equipment through either HDMI or component video connections. Although the Apple website states that an enhanced-definition or high-definition widescreen television is required, Apple did confirm to MacLife that the unit does work with standard definition TVs with component video connectors,[4] but the picture may be vertically stretched if the TV does not support anamorphic widescreen.[5] Audio is supported via digital optical and analog (RCA connector) audio ports. The device connects to other computers either through an Ethernet connection, or wirelessly through the standard IEEE 802.11b, g, n wireless protocols. A USB port is also included on the device, but is reserved for service and diagnostics. Apple TV comes with the standard Apple Remote, although compatible universal remotes are known to work.[6][7] Apple TV can be paired with only one remote (default is unpaired) to prevent conflicts from other IR-capable devices.[8] Apple has recently confirmed that it will continue to offer new features through automatic software upgrades, leaving the door open to further utilization of its hardware capabilities and new software developments.[9] One of these such features is the newly announced ability of the TV to receive a direct stream from the popular video site YouTube videos to the Apple TV. [edit]Syncing and streaming In sync mode, Apple TV works in a similar way to the iPod. It is paired with an iTunes library on a single computer and can then sync with that library, copying content to its own hard drive. After syncing, Apple TV is not required to remain on the network for the device to continue functioning.[10] Sync modes include "automatic" for syncing all iTunes content to the hard drive (in a specific priority), or "selected content" to only sync specified content.[11] However, syncing iTunes content to Apple TVs hard drive is not required, and Apple TV can also function as a peer-to-peer digital media receiver, streaming content from iTunes libraries and playing the content over the network.[6] Streaming performance of movies and TV shows purchased from the iTunes Store over an 802.11g wireless network was described by CNET's John P. Falcone as "impressive".[12] Apple TV also includes the unapproved wireless-n standard[13] for streaming 720p HD content.[14] Third party functionality extends streaming beyond the home network to enable streaming of Apple TV content across the Internet.[15] Apple TV can stream content from up to five computers/iTunes libraries and five Apple TVs can be linked to the same iTunes library. On a single network, iLounge's Jeremy Horwitz tested "two Apple TVs with one computer, multiple computers with one Apple TV, and multiple computers with multiple Apple TVs" and all tests passed successfully. However Jeremy did note that syncing multiple Apple TVs simultaneously in the same environment may cause network slowdowns.[14] [edit]Look and feel Apple TV presents a simple interface based on the Front Row software for Macintosh computers. Content is organized into six groups (Movies, TV Shows, Music, You Tube, Podcasts, and Photos), and is presented in the initial menu along with options that allow the user to change "Settings" and "Sources". These initial menu options then lead to other submenus. The included Apple Remote is used to navigate through the menus by using the up or down buttons and selecting options with the play button. The left/right buttons are used to perform rewind and fast-forward functions while viewing video content, but also perform previous song/next song functionality when selecting audio-only content. The remote does not control audio volume on Apple TV. Aside from "Movies" and "TV Shows" content, the "TV Shows" options allows the user to sort contents by show or date and the "Movies" option also allows the user to view movie trailers for new releases, just as the Front Row software does on a Mac. All video content, including movies, TV shows, music videos and video podcasts, includes bookmark functionality. Apple TV automatically bookmarks video content midstream to continue play at a later time.[16] The "Music" submenu offers similar options to those found on an iPod, presenting the available music sorted by Artist, Album, Songs, Genres and Composers, as well as offering a shuffle option and listing available audiobooks. As categories are selected with the remote, animated album art is displayed on the side of the display for the contents of the selected category. While playing "audio-only" content such as music and audio podcasts, Apple TV periodically moves album art and content info on the TV display to prevent burn-in on video displays.[16] Under "Podcasts", both video and audio-only podcasts are supported. TWiT's Leo Laporte notes that the podcast support in the Apple TV puts podcasts on the same level as other media[17] and media companies have already begun producing Apple TV-compatible video podcasts.[18] While video and audio content can be either synced or streamed to the Apple TV, photos must be synced to the device before the "Photos" option lets the user view them. It does not stream photos from other computers, although Apple has said they plan to add that feature.[19] The "Settings" option lets the user pair the device with a remote,[6] update the system software, and configure various video and audio settings. The "Sources" option is for pairing the device with other computers, whether for syncing or streaming. Both options require the user to enter a code in iTunes to authorize access.[6] [edit]Content support Content has to be in certain formats to play on the Apple TV.[6] It supports video encoded with either the H.264 video codec for a maximum resolution of 720p at 25 fps or the MPEG-4 video codec for a maximum resolution of 720x432 (432p) at 30 fps. Audio can be encoded with AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, AIFF, or WAV audio codecs. It also has support for files encrypted with the FairPlay Digital Rights Management technology. For photos it supports the JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, and PNG image file formats.[1] Because iTunes supports more formats than Apple TV, attempts to sync unsupported content to Apple TV will result in iTunes error message(s).[20] Apple TV supports content purchased from the iTunes store. A user cannot purchase iTunes Store content from Apple TV itself, but Apple TV will connect directly to the iTunes store and let the user play short previews of store content through the "Movie" and "TV Shows" options.[21] Also, free iTunes store content is also supported (e.g. podcasts), but games are not. Also, although AirPort Express (a similar audio-only product from Apple) supported iTunes radio functionality, Apple TV does not. Aside from content obtained from the iTunes Store, Apple included an "Export to Apple TV" option in an update to their QuickTime software that was released days before Apple TV started shipping. This allows content in some formats that the device doesn't support to be re-encoded into accepted formats for playback on the device.[22] Applications which make use of QuickTime to export media also have access to the "Export to Apple TV" option, for example iMovie.[23] Some third-party content conversion tools also provide "Export to Apple TV" options and Macworld has created a guide for using the tools to convert media to Apple TV-compatible formats.[24] Apple TV supports H.264 (up to 1280 x 720 pixels) and MPEG-4 (640 x 480 pixels) video formats; AAC (16-320 kbps), MP3 (16-320 kbps, with VBR), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV audio formats; and JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, and PNG image formats.
