Quote : | "The technology, called DOCSIS 3.0, was developed by the cable industry's research arm, Cable Television Laboratories. It bonds together four cable lines but is capable of allowing much more capacity. The laboratory said last month it expected manufacturers to begin submitting modems for certification under the standard by the end of the year.
In the presentation, ARRIS Group Inc. chief executive Robert Stanzione downloaded a 30-second, 300-megabyte television commercial in a few seconds and watched it long before a standard modem worked through an estimated download time of 16 minutes." |
"By the end of the year" probably means we won't see this for a couple more years at least, but I look forward to it. Renting movies over internet services like Xbox Live should really take off if they keep prices competitive with Netflix and Blockbuster.

As long as competition stays low, don't expect any big improvements in price or service any time soon.
Here's to hoping FIOS, WiMax, and all the other technologies keep coming on so that we get good selection and price sooner rather than later. 5/9/2007 2:28:52 PM |

if a "standard modem" can download 300 MBs in 16 minutes, i want that modem.5/9/2007 2:35:36 PM |

i love the connection here at work, 300 mb would take about 20 seconds if the sending server was up to the task.
300 megs in 16 minutes is entirely possible over a normal cable line connection, finding a server that will upload it too you at high speed is a tad harder/rarer... 5/9/2007 2:37:22 PM |

so by "standard modem" they mean a cable modem/DSL line, not a dial-up modem.
a "standard modem" is a dial-up modem. 5/9/2007 2:40:01 PM |

^^yep, you can only transfer as fast as the weakest link in the data path.
But, my nerd penis would smile if roadrunner upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0
^ "standard modem" has no meaning without context other than talking about a device that modulates/demodulates data into and out of analog signals. ]] 5/9/2007 2:41:05 PM |

150 Mbit is less than 20 MB / sec. Even cheapass hard drives can write that fast. Additionally... why would you even write it to the hard disk? Store a buffer in RAM and stream it from the server. XBox Media Center works fine over a 54 Mbit connection. 150 Mbit would be sufficient to stream 720p or 1080i content.5/9/2007 3:59:03 PM |

Seriously Arab13, you don't need to bash hard drives in general just because you hate Microsoft. 5/9/2007 5:44:33 PM |

i have yet to use the Microsoft Live video and tv show download option....i was really excited about using it but non of the TV shows i like or that i would justifiy paying for are on there yet
if they add Law and Order: SVU as part of the NBC line up also adding USA original series like Monk and Psych i'd so start using it... too late for HBO since the only thing i watched there was Rome. 5/9/2007 7:15:20 PM |

They never list how many houses " nodes " share that 150 mbps.
They also always fail to compare it to a GPON based FIOS system which will be the standard for all FiOS deployments from here on out. So if it isnt faster than the old pon based technology....
I think DOCSIS 3.0 is a great step in the right path. Just dont amp it up like it isnt slower.5/9/2007 7:28:05 PM |
