as far as cache and their policies...is that bad for the life of the drive?
I'm tired of the huge lag every time i come to do things like empty the recycling bin, access the external (media) drive after not using it for a long period of time etc....so i changed the policies on it to keep it cached like any other drive and increase performance.
What are the risks in doing this besides the usual risks of corrupted data if it gets disconnected during reading or writing etc. as though it were an internal drive.
oh i forgot to add: its also connected to a battery back-up just like my computer so I don't run the risk of power interruptions during storms.

Not bad...it seems like you have already taken care of the potential issues. 5/12/2007 6:37:49 PM |

That's pretty much it man. Just make sure you run chkdsk on it every week or two because it's going to get fugged up over a long period if you dont. Don't ask me how or why this happens, but it's been that way going on 6 external drives I have setup just like you are now.
Totally worth it for the speed increase though.
Also, make sure if you do unplug it, to do the whole "safe to remove" route first.5/12/2007 7:45:56 PM |

sweet! I'll make sure and schedule check disk to run once a week. Running it now for the first time on this drive. 5/12/2007 8:05:15 PM |
