her name is Dahlia

a friend of mine picked this girl up off the durham freeway...i volunteered to take her until she can find a more suitable home - preferably one with a number of people in it (living by myself means she only gets attention when i'm here, and i think she would do better with a family or in a situation where there are a number of people around)

we THINK she is a mix of lab and weimaraner, but it's hard to tell - she tracks and points, anyway...she knows sit and stay (with hand signals as well), and does not run off when you let her off her lead - she'll usually run about 25 feet and then look back at you - if you give her permission, she'll just run all over the place, but comes back as soon as you call her (though she expects a treat )

she plays well with other dogs and cats (though she's a bit intimidated by large dogs), and is GREAT around kids...she doesn't bite, but does like to fetch and chew on rawhide...i haven't seen her chew on furniture or shoes or anything but the toys i've given her...she is crate trained, as well, and sleeps there at night and when no one is home...i've never heard her bark, but she does whine sometimes when you leave her by herself in her crate or in a room

she is halfway house trained - as in, she RARELY goes to the bathroom inside unless you ignore her pleas to go outside and use the bathroom - she NEVER goes to the bathroom inside her crate

she's in the process of being de-wormed, and she's getting spayed this week, in addition to receiving her rabies vaccination and the 7-way vaccination (kennel cough, etc.)...according to our vet, she's healthy and happy and doing well...we think she is between 5 and 6 months...based on her current size, she will be a medium to large dog

i am giving her away for free, with the spay and rabies and vaccinations and worms taken care of (unless you want her before those things are done)...you can have the food and treats as well...there are a number of things i have for her as well, including a brand new crate, toys, bowls, collar, leash, etc. that you can have for $100, or you can buy your own

if you're interested in her, please let me know - i'll be more than happy to meet you somewhere and you can get to know her...once you see her, i think you'll fall in love with her just like everyone else has!

good looking dog....I'd take it if I didn't already have a couple. I'm sure she'll find a home in no time. GL

Gorgeous dog, and seems to be well tempered and trained. Just out of curiousity, why are you getting rid of her if you have spent all this time and money on her?

^^ so far, she HASN'T spent much time alone during the day

^ well, the "getting rid" of her part is still somewhat up in the air

i really haven't spent that much...i got the $20 spay from animalkind, and the deworming/vaccs i did myself (i used to be a vet tech), and the rabies is dirt cheap when you tell them you adopted her from the side of the road and you have the $20 spay, so it's been less than $50...i'd rather spend the $50 myself and have her go to a great home than try to give her away...and as for the equipment, it cost just a bit more than $100, so i'm not really out that much

all that said, this situation is three-fold:

1.) originally, this was just me taking care of her until she found a new home (because the girl who picked her up off the road isn't financially capable to giving her what she needs)...but i kinda fell in love with her and it nearly broke my heart not to see her taken care of like a puppy should be...still, this wasn't supposed to be an adoption on my part

2.) part is my selfishness and finding it restrictive to account for her 24/7 where i used to just be able to get up and go and do whatever (though that's what having a puppy entails, of course)...i'm currently living on-campus while keeping her (haha, i know, right!), and it's somewhat annoying to have to avoid RAs and staff and such, and to keep her from whining when i leave

3.) i'm going to be out of the country for almost 2 months this summer, and i was PLANNING on doing some jetsetting in a year or so, and it seems irresponsible for me to keep a puppy knowing that i'm going to be gone for an extended period of time and not be able to take her with me

i don't know, i'm thinking about keeping her for now (as my parents have volunteered to care for her on their farm - which she'll love - while i'm gone this summer), but i'm trying to make the best decision based on what's actually in her best interests...it sucks

actually, i'll be 25 this year, and i do...i moved off-campus for 3 years and then decided that my job at the university was that much easier when i didn't have to drive 15 minutes there...i've lost weight since being on campus as i bike everywhere, and i've rather enjoyed wolf village...i have no regrets whatsoever

beautiful dog

I saw your post on craigslist

try contacting www.bfpa.org
email the contact people on there and they'll list her as a courtesy listing. the website gets a lot of traffic and she'll be on petfinder.

black lab mixes are a dime a dozen and they take longer to adopt so the more exposure you can get her the better.

keeping her in a dorm is risky (as i'm sure you know) so please be careful. I had a rabbit in the dorm and I got written up twice for it and they threatened to fine me (never did). If you get in a bind contact me and i'll help you find her a foster home

i have had a HUGE influx of people interested in her, from both tdub and craigslist...sorry if i haven't replied yet - i've had a lot to sort through (some people are just sketchy, and it's obvious they either 1.) won't take care of her or 2.) plan on using her for dogfight bait)...i'll get back to people as soon as possible, though

yeah, it would be better to give her to a t-dubber than someone from craigslist.

I wouldnt say that. Here you have a huge collection of college kids who see the dog and say "aahttp://www... how cute" yet don't have the means or living situation necessary to take care of a dog.

So it's a mixed bag. His best bet is to meet whoever responds and see what they are like. I think you can get good and bad from craigslist and TWW.

just wanted everyone to know that she ended up in a very nice home...actually, friends of the family who have a farm a few miles away from my parents'...sorry if i didn't get back with you specifically - there were sooooooo many people interested in her (it was depressing as hell how many people were obviously unsuited to having a dog of any kind)...thanks for the advice, encouragement, and interest!
