What, in your opinion, are the 5 most significant home runs in major league history? Does not have to be just significant in terms of winning and losing but also in terms of a cultural impact.

Here are some of my candidates:

- Joe Carter 1993 World Series
- Bobby Thompson shot heard round the world
- Babe Ruth "the called shot"
- Barry Bonds #73
- Mark McGwire #62
- Roger Maris #61
- Bucky Dent
- George Brett pine tar home run

I know I am missing some. What do you think?

Mazeroski. I think that is probably the second most famous behind the Shot heard 'round the World

[Edited on May 14, 2007 at 6:55 PM. Reason : also the babe ruth 'called shot' is mythical]

yeah forgot about maz... also the 'called' shot may be mythical, but it might not be, somebody was willing to invest many dollar bills on that baseball.

Dave Henderson's Game 5 homer in '86 off Donnie Moore. Would have been bigger had they not choked the World Series away but Moore offed himself over that...

Tino/Brosius on consecutive nights shortly after 9/11 in the '01 Series..

The one that bounced off of Canseco's head.

Or was that just a double?

I can't believe I'm the first one to throw out the obvious one, but Hank Aaron's 715th home run. How many times have you seen the clip, complete with the two fans who ran out and met him at 3rd base.

#73 sparked the Popov Hayashi bullshit, so culturally it was probably bigger.

My personal favorite.
injured as hell, not expected to play, fouls off the first 10 million pitches, and then BOOM!

I was shocked to read halfway down the thread before Gibson's homer was mentioned.

That would have been my first thought.

Fisk's homerun in extra innings, game 6 of the world series was one of the greatest ever.

Thompson's is the most dramatic, I love hearing the radio replay, "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!"
