Car has been sitting up for years. I've come to the conclusion that one of two things needs to happen:
1. send 'er to the scrap yard (after pulling off all parts of value and selling)
2. clean up, get a new hood, and fix floor pans, pan rails. Throw in some new seats and a dash cover and hastily sheetmetal-panel and carpet unsightly interior spots. Drive hell out of it.
She was quick as hell in the day for a NA 2.8L, but never reached full potential, as clutch was slipping BADLY before stripdown/tranny rebuild/engine rebuild.
Had 3" exhaust back from dual 2" downpipes. All custom fabbed and installed by yours truly. Because I am a god of sorts in that department. 5/23/2007 9:06:13 AM |

either sell it and get a Z instead of ZX
or make it an import rat rod...nasty suspension, track day and saturday afternoon special. 5/23/2007 12:43:00 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Fuck a Z. I like 'em, but I like the ZX better. More room, better electrical system, and my '79 is the lightest of the ZX's...actually lighter than some '78 Z's.
The rear suspension isn't as sexy, but it's still IRS, and I know how to make it work. Add to that I have CV halfshafts and 3.90 gears with my R200 diff. And an earlier, close-ratio 5-speed. Still overdrive in 5th, but not as steep. 5/23/2007 12:51:57 PM |

Been there done that. Sentimental value for automobiles does nothing but create lots of wasted time and effort. As I have learned through many many project in my past 15 years is that unless you have ALL the parts and ALL of the money and time to knock it out in a few months then it will just be a black hole sucking you dry of all your money and sanity. Projects that run into years will usually involve redoing things several times over either due to neglect or changing your mind as time passes.
Exibit A:
Total investment: $15,000 Years owned : 8 Sold for $5500
Do I miss it........sure but if I want another one, there are plenty of other ones to go buy that someone else has allready put the time ,blood, sweat, tears and has invested 3 times the amount of money than it is actually worth. Lesson learned.

I feel the same way. Same reason I still have my '79 Malibu even though I've had to pay for storage for it recently. Keep the ZX, get it back on the road, and have fun with it! I think you'll regret it otherwise...I know I would.

Hey remember when you said you would have the 'Teg running in time for last year's VIR Holiday Laps? Remember the part about how you can knock it out in a weekend?
Just don't take on a project that you can't finish. You are really ADD about this. If you do it, you need to have a plan and you need to stick with it--that means saying no to other projects etc in order to make sure you have time to get shit done.
If you do it, you can't go about it in the same way as your other scuttled projects. If it were me, I'd part it and get one in better shape. 5/25/2007 9:11:48 PM |

So is the Teg. I'm tired of even thinking about the damn things.
Fact is, I've had it with the whole car scene. There are many more important things for me to think about/worry about than resurrecting a shitpile automobile for which I had some sentimental attachment. 5/28/2007 11:47:40 AM |

^^, ^^^ I tried with the 330ci (although I never intended to quit--only to take a sabbatical). I think I made it about 2-3 months before I sold it and bought my Evo, planning to do all the bolt-ons until I made the high-11s (pretty easy with the IX, actually).
i ended up keeping it stock, but am probably about to take another step back into the car scene in terms of time spent under the hood or on a creeper with the whole 4x4 thing.
