u can take your tower/cpu over there. they have it on a cd and they wont let u take it with you, thus the idea that only laptops can get it. it's doable, just most ppl dont want to take a desktop there. (to Daniels) 5/27/2007 3:21:24 PM |

ncsu will let you load solidworks for free? is it a limited trial period, or do you get to keep it, even after you finish gc120 (or whatever class it is) 5/27/2007 4:11:24 PM |

^^ that's probably why then, the disc i used is a 2006 version, so they may have taken off the watermarks fortunately that would have annoyed me.
they will let u have it free (i think if you're engineering? ) not sure about how long the license is, but for my version, it comes with a version of putty that logs into eos under your unity to activate the license each time you run it... stupid i know, but i think it's required. if somebody knows otherwise please correct me 5/27/2007 10:32:27 PM |

or just download it from a torrent site and copy the templates from the NCSU computers and put the templates on your computer. that's what i did when i took GC211 so i could do all the drawings and shit at home on my own computer in comfort. 5/27/2007 11:04:43 PM |

The license states that you have to uninstall it once you're no longer an NCSU engineering student (i.e. graduated or transferred). But, besides that, it's the full version of Solidworks and its free. The current version of Solidworks being installed also comes with the CosmosSuite plugin. 5/28/2007 12:54:08 AM |

autocad and solid works are completely different design tools. yes they are both cad but solid works is closer to pro-e than autocad. 5/28/2007 1:42:37 AM |

solidworks is an awesome fucking tool.
if i was a mech engineer, i'd be all over that shit. i want to get it at work, but its expensive as hell though. only the ME's have it.
at least i get PSpice, OrCad and PADS

I don't know your feelings on pirating, but you can get pretty much anything on Limewire. 5/28/2007 3:01:31 AM |

joe, whether or not takin GC makes any diff at all... i'm CSC and got SW for free. and fwiw, there's no way i'd ever choose autocad over sw 5/28/2007 3:54:48 AM |

yeah, i know AutoCAD. its a great tool for what its used, its everywhere. i would totally use it for one-line diagrams and similar.
i guess im just impressed by the 3D rendering abilities of SW. i dont think my graphics card is capable of really utilizing SW. from what i understand you really need a specialized card, not your typical gaming video card. 5/28/2007 4:59:56 AM |

solidworks would work just fine on a 5 year old machine with onboard video 5/28/2007 3:34:53 PM |

A workstation video card isn't going to do much for you on Solidworks.
Outside Rhino/3d Max/Maya you can use damn near anything and it will work about the same. Solidworks just needs a HOSS processor and a lot of memory to run the analysis tools. 5/28/2007 3:36:45 PM |

^ you should add Alias StudioTools to that list. you have no idea of much of a PITA it was to spec cards for Design workstations that were ST-qualified. 5/28/2007 10:05:03 PM |

well, i was told that SolidWorks requires specialized cards to work properly. Like nVidia's Quadro, 3DLabs' Wildcat, or ATI's FireGL ...not the typical video cards for gaming, and definitely not an onboard video accelerator.
maybe im confusing "preferred" with "acceptable", though. 5/29/2007 3:07:22 AM |
