My younger brother graduates from high school on Thursday. He is still deciding on where he is going to go to college (get to play soccer at a better school vs. full ride at NC Weslyan/spot on soccer team). Because of this, I don't want to get him school stuff. He turns 18 later this month. Any good suggestions for grad gifts besides cash?

give him some loot

while gift cards are cool and everything, you can only spend them in one place.

i don't really prefer cash, because i SHOULD spend cash on paying bills, i can't spend a target gift card on bills

Pretty much all of my HS gifts were cash, and so were all of friends....it was 100% preferred.

You could go for something standard and necessary for college like a mini fridge, but what's the fun in that? Besides, some chump will buy it in August before he ships off to skool anyways.

Cash, a gift card. He'll use and appreciate that more than anything else that you could possibly get him.

How about LEGAL suggestions? He said this was high school graduation, not college graduation.

i got a laundry basket filled with goodies that I wouldn't have bought on my own like socks, shower shoes, poster putty for the walls, nice calculator...other random shit like that. Walmart/Target giftcards do rock though cause then he can buy whatever he needs at these places instead of you worrying that he already ran out of cash cause he spent it on booze

This is one of those times when money isn't considered an easy way out. I know it's all I wanted when I graduated, not some crappy bedsheets or giftcards

one of my favorite gifts was something similar. it was a box full of office supplies...pens, tape, tape dispenser, stapler, staples, pencils, post its, calculator, white out, highliters blah blah blah. i had so much shit i literally didn't have to buy anything until spring semester sophmore year.

my other favorite gift was cash...lots of cash.

The laundry basket idea really is a good one - though I remember I had the most fun shopping for stuff like that with the list they give you at Bed Bath and Beyond or whatever. But this is a dude, so he might not be into that at all and enjoy having it already bought for him.
Throw a $20 in there too, there's something to be said for having to wait all summer to enjoy your graduation gift with no choice.

I received a laundry basket as a gift as well ... included detergent, fabric softener, stain sticks, etc., in addition to $50 in quarters. That was a nice touch.

The laundry basket stuff is a good idea even for a guy. Buy him stuff he'll need for when he moves out. Bedding, towels, shower caddy. If you have some more money then maybe a tv or dvd player.

Cash = #1
Alcohol = #2
Although, my best HS graduation gift was from distant relatives who got me a very rolling duffle bag. They didn't know I was going to State (right by my parents' place), so thought it might be nice for trips to and from home.

It works well for trips to and from the beach and mtns

Handy stuff like what Wordsworth listed is also excellent. Think about all the stuff you were always running somewhere to buy, and get that. Unfortunately, the timing is off on this, but after the school supply sales in the fall, you can get 10 or 12 spiral bound notebooks for < $0.50 (I've got several packs of 12 that I got for $0.12). If you know his study habits, you can get some of the more expensive study supplies to tide him over til clearance hits.

^ Reminds me, I got a 4-piece luggage set when I graduated, which was probably one of the best gifts I got. I've used it a ton, and it's something I probably wouldn't have bought for myself since luggage is $$.
