that thing is coming apart under any hard use. cold weld and not enough of it...
personally, i wouldn't want to weld the diff on a fwd derby car in the first place. assuming a dirt/mud track like most, steering will be non existant going forward, it's just going to push like hell. it won't be an easy task keeping it lined up for hits in reverse either depending on how much water they put down, it'll be trying to spin around/fishtail (or headtail? ).
on the upside, it'll still pull strong in the event of a tire loss or cv shaft/joint failure. i lost a front tire on my subaru last year though, and it didn't affect it much. just set the e-brake a touch (it's on the front wheels) and it kept going just fine.

yeah, it usually is. it's just an odd subaru thing i guess. it's the only vehicle i've ever seen like that, there may be other brands/models that have done it too but i don't know.
it makes a hell of alot more sense if you have to actually make an emergency stop with it vs. a rear wheeled e-brake that's just going to lock the tires up.... 6/4/2007 6:16:05 PM |

^^that is some ugly ass ghetto shit, not to mention done completely wrong. welding forged to cast... durrrrr! the idea is to melt and weld the side/spider gears to eachother, not to the carrier. if that doesn't break soon, it'll be a freakin miracle.

if you knew how to weld then you would know that welding the closest surface area would be the best way to do it. could only weld on spider gear to the other, teeth are not close enough to each other to weld to each other. so the carrier was the next best thing. let me know when you can talk about something you know something (or anything) about6/5/2007 1:57:26 PM |

it's called a fillet weld, you heat the forged gears to around 400 degrees with a deep penterating weld around 130 amps and build it up tapering off your heat, then cool it slowly, welding anything to a cast carrier is a bad idea due to the different heat dissipation rates and grain structures, hell its a miracle it didn't crack when the weld cooled
and i doubt you have anywhere near the experience bbr has with this, or at least 6 other users on here

you are so fucking clueless it's not even funny anymore. i've welded countless differentials (among tons of other things), and have never had one break. they've all be HEAVILY abused also, i know a number of people on here can vouch for that.
welding to the closest surface? that's the dumbest logic i've ever heard. in case you need to know how a differential works, the side gears and spider gears mesh together you idiot. how much closer can that get?
secondly, the carrier is cast. you can not successfully weld that to the gears with whatever shitty little mig and horrible execution you've used. it's possible to weld cast to forged with proper pre/post heating and the right equipment, neither of which you've done.
i mean hell, you could have at least gotten penetration even if you didn't do it right. that looks like a bird took a shit on it.
be sure to report back when it breaks and eats your whole diff up. how many people do you need to tell you it's wrong? i'm obviously FAR from the only person who knows this.

im sure he does have more welding expeirance. why dont you stfu. i was just putting my .$.02 worth in for the thread. everything i do is always going to be better than bbr anyway so im not so woried about it. i had an extra hour to kill and some arc weld to waste so i thought i would take the cover off and weld my shit. holds up pretty well to having gears slammed in it every day. and has not caused a problem. good weld BAONEST. ....
