bribery charges:
Quote : | "WASHINGTON -- Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., will be indicted in a bribery investigation involving business deals he tried to broker in Africa, The Associated Press learned Monday.
The indictment is being handed up in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. A press conference was being organized for late Monday in Washington to discuss the case.
Jefferson has been accused of taking $100,000 from a telecommunications businessman. Authorities said they found $90,000 of the cash in a freezer at Jefferson's home." |

PS: He was also indicted on racketeering and money-laundering--16 counts.

It's about time they indicted that bastard.
I liked how all of congress (Republicans and Democrats) was up in arms because they searched his office.

Im by no means defending the guy, he fucked up and needs to be punished.
But, your weak argument about the foley scandal just to try and rub this thing in our face because we are democrats is pretty sad. I know there are corrupt politicians in the democratic party, just like there are in the republican party, theres no secret there. I give you a North Carolina Democrat and the Congressional Black Caucus. Is that good enough for you, asshole?
Black Caucus opposes Jefferson treatment
Quote : | "'It's about to blow up in their face,' predicted Rep. Melvin Watt, chairman of the CBC.
The North Carolina Democrat added Thursday night that black voters might wonder why a 'black member of Congress' would be stripped of his committee post with neither rule nor precedent to justify it.
The reaction heightened a controversy that has flared at the outset of a national election campaign in which Democrats accuse Republicans of fostering a 'culture of corruption.'
The controversy stems from a bribery investigation that already has resulted in two convictions. The FBI claims he accepted $100,000 in cash and that its agents later found $90,000 of it wrapped and stashed in a freezer in his home." |

^^^ Did you even read that article?
Quote : | "House Democratic leaders are determined to sanction Rep. William Jefferson, scandal-scarred but unindicted, despite a blunt reminder from the Congressional Black Caucus that he is entitled to a "presumption of innocence."" |
Is what you should have quoted. Presumption of innocence is a core tenet of our legal system.
From everything i've seen, this guy is probably guilty as sin, but legally, he's entitled to a presumption of innocence, and the black caucus is worried how it looks to black voters to treat him as guilty, and they are claiming it's unprecedented to do this.

I really wish you stupid wingnuts would stop using this waste of electrons as 25% of your posting content. Get over it. The republicans up until the last election were the dominate party. So naturally, if all politicians are evil, then republicans are going to get condemned more often, just based on the statistics.
The college educated here aren't so blind and retarded to think their party is free and clear of acts like this. So stop wasting our time being stirring up controversy where there is none to be stirred. It's lame, and disgusting, and unworthy of this section.

Well, it looks as if the Dems' diversion of the firings of those federal prosecutors didn't grasp the news long enough to keep this one under wraps.
Hopefully, Congressional Democrats will deny John Boehner's request that this be investigated, resulting in him keeping his seat. I'm sure that'll help them with that approval rating problem they are having (you know, the one LOWER than the President's). I'm sure it'll also help them with the elections in '08.

Another Jefferson associate, Louisville, Ky., telecommunications executive Vernon Jackson, pleaded guilty to paying between $400,000 and $1 million in bribes to Jefferson in exchange for his assistance securing business deals in Nigeria and other African nations. Jackson was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.
Court records indicate Jefferson was videotaped taking a $100,000 cash bribe from an FBI informant. Most of that money later turned up in the freezer in Jefferson's home." |
Isn't this just an example of Bush continuing to kick the poor victims of New Orleans by taking away their favorite congressman? After all, they re-elected him knowing he was awaiting indictment...The people spoke and wanted Jefferson back representing them.

^^ Yeah, some are calling it "freezer burn," too.
I just want to point out that I think it's wrong to brand a whole party--Democrat, Republican, or others--by one or a handful of scandals. And I believe that the Democrats have used the recent Republican scandals for political gain--the Republicans have done so in the past, too. But two wrongs don't make a right.
The worst part of this, though, is the group of Democrats who shamefully defended Jefferson--who is a crook, make no mistake about it--despite overwhelming evidence against him. But don't forget this scandal's connection to the politics of Nigeria and other African countries:
Quote : | "The impact of the case has stretched across continents and even roiled presidential politics in Nigeria. According to court records, Jefferson told associates he needed cash to pay bribes to the country's vice president, Atiku Abubakar.
Abubakar denied the allegations, which figured prominently in that country's presidential elections in April. He ran for the presidency and finished third.
In Lagos, Nigeria, Abubakar spokesman Garba Shehu said the former vice president 'has always denied wrongdoing in the matter.'" |

^ PS: Yeah, I forgot that this is the same guy who used the National Guard to secure personal belongings from his house while people were waiting to be rescued--gg:
Quote : | "Amid the chaos and confusion that engulfed New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck, a congressman used National Guard troops to check on his property and rescue his personal belongings -- even while New Orleans residents were trying to get rescued from rooftops, ABC News has learned.
On Sept. 2 -- five days after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast -- Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., who represents New Orleans and is a senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, was allowed through the military blockades set up around the city to reach the Superdome, where thousands of evacuees had been taken." |
