So the diff. fluids (front/rear) and transfer case fluids in my '05 Grand Cherokee 4x4 are about due for changing, but I can't believe these prices.

I'll need ~5 quarts of 75w-140 synthetic fluid for the differentials, and ~2 quarts of NV247 transfer case fluid. The dealership was charging $12.36/quart for the 75w-140, and $25/quart for the transfer case fluid.

I haven't even been able to locate the transfer case fluid outside of a Jeep dealership, and Advance wants like $15/quart for the Mobil1 version of the 75w-140.

Am I seriously going to have to shell out $110 for fluids? Any cheaper options? On another note, why is the 75w-140 about 4x more expensive than the surrounding weights?

b/c the book says do it at 30k

and I value my 7 year / 75k warranty which I don't want to invalidate by not keeping up the service the way Jeep tells me to

bwahahahahahahahaha, you dont have a damn thing to worry about, 100k is the very minimum i would change it, hell mine has over 200k with the original gear oil in it and it still looks fine, the only real reason you need to change it often is if you drive through deep water or if you do a lot of heavy towing

yeah, unless you do alot of 4 wheeling in mud/water you don't need to change it this soon, especially being synthetic.

you also don't "have" to use synthetic. those axles will accept 75w90 dino oil. you will need to add friction modifyer to both though.

your t-case will accept regular dexron atf.

it sounds like you're really concerned about following the manual to the letter though, so you've found your only options for doing that.

yeah, that's a really short interval, period, and especially for synth

but hey, what're you gonna do? looks like it's either ante up or lose the warranty...or at least the warranty on your diffs and t-case (which aren't likely to cause problems even if you don't change the oil right now...it's a gamble you could take if you wanted to).

some dealers have started offering all inclusive type serives in recent years, but it's still not part of the warranty.

slowback, selectrac is 242, 247 is quadradrive / quadratrack (I forget which one)... anyway if you read the manual it should tell you dexron/mercon III will work in the xfercase (I could be wrong but go by the manual) and you can get the diff fluid from advance auto parts.

Don't listen to other people about the interval... sure it isn't 100% necessary to do until 100K or so but changing it before it gets bad saves problems in the long run. With stock chrysler axles bringing the suck changing the fluid doesn't hurt at all. 247 should hold up even to mild offroading if taken care of properly.
