Does this offend you? If you see a woman (with a blanket over her, of course) breastfeeding her infant at a mall, restaurant, or any other type of public place, does it make you feel uncomfortable or offend you?

I ask this because I breastfeed my infant daughter. My father-in-law came into town a few weeks ago and we went to dinner. He asked if I needed to bring a bottle or anything for the restaurant and I said that I could just cover myself with a blanket and breastfeed. He proceeded to act all freaked out and said that I should go to the bathroom to do this. It kind of upset me, but I didn't want to offend him, so I confined my daughter and myself into a teeny bathroom stall and sat on the toilet to feed her.

Is it wrong of me to feed my daughter in public places? Would you be offended? I just don't see why my daughter should be made to go into the bathroom to eat (as long as I am not exposed).

Does not bother me.

14-190.9. Indecent exposure.

(b) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a woman may breast feed in any public or private location where she is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother's breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

It used to bother me-I don't know why. I think it was because I saw a fat lady doing it at the zoo a couple years ago-she was watching the gorillas and there were a lot of kids around.

Now I have a sister w/ a kid and my wife is 7 months pregnant.

Some people get offended by shit like this just for the self-importance factor... so:

I wait tables, and it kinda pisses me off when I see someone sitting in the middle of my busy restaurant breastfeeding their baby. It not that I really care, but the large volume of people dining around said breastfeeder may not appreciate the act, or may even be offended.

Bad experience can affect my tips, playing with my money is like playing with my emotions, etc... I hope you see where I'm going.

In non-crowded places and not where I work, meh, go for it.

I bet those pumps hurt, plus they're messy.

Your father in law may seem like a dick to some of us. He may also be weirded out by seeing YOU breastfeeding, not anyone else.

in a restaurant it's uncalled for unless it's in a waiting room or something.

WHY, THINK OF ALL THE BAD HEALTH PROBLEMS OFFENDING THEM WILL CAUSE THEM. THINK OF THEIR RUINED 10 MINUTE SLICE OF THEIR LONG LIFETIME OF NOT BEING OFFENDED.

OH DEAR NO, NO THE DREADED OFFENDED.

when you breast feed, try and not do it too out in the open unless need-be... respect other people, too. if there's a more secluded spot near-by, do it there. by all means don't sit on a fucking toilet and do it and don't do it at the dinner table.

when your baby is crying, take it where there are less people to calm it down.

these are all things most people should know.

feed your kid in private. That is not something that anyone else needs to witness, regardless of how many blankets you cover the kids head with.

DO NO BREASTFEED YOUR KID IN A RESTAURANT. For the love of God.

so is sex. But I do not need to see that either.

Some things are personal such as sex and the beautiful moment of a mother feeding her child. It does not need to be paraded around. I actually want to protect the beauty of this act as opposed to push it out in the open for all to witness.

absolutely ok if you cover yourself

the only time it makes me uncomfortable is when there is no covering and the lady just whips it out. and even then, it's probably just "me", but if you cover it up it should be fine.

Don't try to twist the point I just made in some feeble meely mouthed way.

I don't call sitting at a table with a blanket covering the act, out in the open. Are you actively trying to position yourself to see what is going on? You can ignore it if she is being discreet about it, which she is. Most people unless they are being nosy staring around at everyone else in the restaurant, aren't even going to notice.

I don't mind if a blanket is used or care is taken to keep it somewhat private. I do however get weirded out by the women that proceed to whip it out and let the baby dangle from the nipple while the mother continues to eat, talk on their cell phone, or continue their shopping.

i might take all of this back once i have kids, but i agree that it's a private kind of thing and i don't think i would want to breastfeed in public or even in front of extended family. i think i would rather take the potential pain of a pump and bring a bottle along than breastfeed in the middle of a restaurant. people are eating and it's distracting. i don't think of it as something to flaunt to the world.

or find a babysittter
or go when it's not baby's scheduled eating time
or stay at home

^breastfed babies eat fairly often, it would be hard to schedule around that. Also babies who are breastfed many times don't transfer to a bottle very well. I feel a little uncomfortable when I see it in public, but I understand its part of life. I personally think I would be a little embarassed to do it in front of people, but if you have to feed your kid, you feed your kid. If restaurants and other places would provide a lounge area for a mother's that would be the solution. Southpoint has a nursing room adjacent to the bathrooms. My church has a special room that allows the mothers to see/hear the service and can nurse their children in a more private place.

my thinking is that you're only out for a few hours, and if the kid needs to eat within those hours just take one bottle. it's not like you're staying in the restaurant for a few days and you have to totally switch to bottle feeding only.

I dunno... I don't have kids... but I don't think I will whip my boob out in public places whenever my babies want to be fed...

I would rather do the breastpump or go out right after the baby is fed, etc.

On another note... I haven't seen people breastfeed in public in a long long time so I don't know if I am offended by it...

Times have changed, but this is one of those old generation things that still sticks with people of his age. He probably wasn't in the delivery room when his children were born, because men shouldn't see their wives in such a manner.

One of my friends has a sticker that says "If breastfeeding offends you, please feel free to cover your head with a blanket."
I giggle every time I see it.

I understand that it's a natural life process but I do get kinda weirded out by it... I'll probably change my opinion when i have kids. It's also REALLY uncomfortable when the person talking to me all of a sudden whips out her tit in mid convo and starts feeding the kid . . I find that I have to concentrate looking her in the face hahhaha

One time I was on vacation and having breakfast at Perkins. This mexilady was breastfeeding, no blanket. I kept seeing this nipple that had to be at least an inch long and I couldn't eat my food.

As long as it's covered, and discreet, I generally have no feeling towards it. But I always thought that a blanket over the baby's head wasn't great for them either and that it might just be easier to take it to the bathroom. (Especially if it has a lounge!)

If it has a lounge area with couches as a separate room, that seems most preferable. I used to see a gaggle of those broads in department stores.

I don't remember where I saw/read this but somewhere they're trying to pass legislature making it illegal to breastfeed in public.

that being said, I think anyone against it needs to grow the fuck up. The female human breast has two functions: 1. as a sexual organ (ie to identify male from female and yes attract males). 2. to feed offspring.

If you can't differentiate the two and therefore act foolish or all up in arms when you see a woman breastfeeding you need to go back to junior high.

Of course to combat the idiocy of most people, I think using a blanket or something and being discreet is totally appropriate. No need to be like "UH OH THE WITTLE ONES HUNGRY TIME TO PULL OUT MY TIT AND LET HIM SUCK ON IT FOR A BIT, HERE YOU GO BUDDY" plop!!.

oh and for you folks who think its a good idea to take it into the restroom.....

[Edited on June 8, 2007 at 12:33 PM. Reason : you go eat your food in the restaurant restroom everytime you go out to eat, and we'll call it even.]

i agree that you should be able to breastfeed as you and the baby see fit.

but i also agree that most people DONT want to see it in public or not / coverd up or not.

i think you should have some respect for your surroundings and make good judgement calls on when and where its acceptable.

if you were in a crowded restaurant i would expect you to respect the facility, other patrons and guests at the table and not breastfeed at the table but take the baby somewhere a little more private.

i know i wouldnt want to see it covered or not but thats just me. I am sure most other people in the place wouldnt want to see it either esp. while trying to eat.

This is a non-discussion. You shouldn't fucking take a baby to a restaurant. Your infant/howler monkey should be kept at home until you've taught it to behave like a human being in public.

if i saw some woman sitting on a bench at the mall/park or whatever it would not bother me. However, I think it would be poor manners and show a lack of class to just bust out your boob in the middle of a sit down restaurant and start breast feeding.

Afterall you wouldn't want someone passing gas, burping, changing their wound bandages in the middle of dinner.
