. . .replaced as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff!

Quote :
"GATES BRIEFING - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announces his recommendation that U.S. Navy Adm. Michael Mullen replace U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during a press briefing at the Pentagon, June 8, 2007."

1. Couldn't get reconfirmed without a lot of trouble?

2. Represents a new Defense Department direction?

BTW: The MSM outlets didn't report this for hours. They were--and still are--doing Paris Hilton stories!

Since he's the first Navy CJCS since 1989, I'd say yes. Actually, other than GEN Meyers, every other CJCS has been a ground pounder of some sort.

What I didn't realize till know is that GEN Pace is a Vietnam vet! He doesn't look that old to me. [no homo] Most of the guys I know still around from Vietnam are crusty old aviators who look like one of the four horsemen when they're flying.

^^^do you mean every other one since 1989? because there have been plenty of non-pounders as CJCS

Since '89 its been all Army except for Gen Pace and Gen Meyer. With the exception of Meyer, they've all been, in some way, associated with the fight on the ground.

LOL! I know the type well--we used to say they were "crispy critters."

I used to get drunk with a SFC LaFountaine, Light Horse Recon--who swore that he had also been in the French Foreign Legion. He looked like fucking Popeye, and he said he had one of his nuts blown off in Vietnam. SFC LaFountaine told me one story about being on guard duty in the jungle over there and seeing an orangutan or something like that sitting in a tree. He was bored, so he started throwing rocks at this thing. SFC LaFountaine said that about the third time he hit it with a rock, the thing broke off a branch and came screaming out of the tree and chased him all over the damned place!

SFC Padilla, Medics, came into my office one day when we had "These Eyes" by The Guess Who blasting on the tape player. All of a sudden, he just started crying and shaking--I asked him what was wrong and he said, "That song just took me back." A flashback--and I've seen a few others--is a fucked up thing to witness.

I've got a lot of stories like that. Those old 'Nam guys were a trip, and if you got a little beer or liquor in them, they'd tell you some stories—if they liked you and trusted you.
