After like 30 minutes on the computer I will not be able to click on anything. I am still able to move my mouse around but I can't click on anything. I thought it was a mouse problem but I can barely do anything with the keyboard either. I can press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and that's all. I can't even do anything in the task manager screen after I press CTRL-ALT-DELETE.

if you're connected to the internet when this happens, disconnect from the net. Also, see if you can run some virus scans and/or spyware scans. You may need to reboot into Safe Mode. 6/15/2007 3:00:26 PM |

this shit is pissing me off
The problem is so unpredictable too. I can't figure out at all what the problem is. I got a new mouse and a new keyboard so I know that isn't the problem.
My mouse will still move but I can't click on anything. I can press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and the Windows Start button but I can't do anything from there. I can't even press CTRL-ALT-DELETE a 2nd time to restart my computer.
If music or anything is going on in the background, it continues. I just can't press or do anything.
What is the problem? I tried all what plusdelta said but it didn't work. 7/1/2007 1:00:57 PM |

So the problem still happened in Safe Mode? 7/1/2007 1:32:55 PM |

i wasn't in safe mode long enough for the problem to happen
I just booted in safe mode and restarted
I'd have to work in safe mode for about an hour for the problem to happen 7/1/2007 10:28:46 PM |

My hard drive is only 7 months old

I have seen some hard drives go bad in one month.
I recommend running a scan.
It could be a bad driver, or program trying to connect that locks the computer up. 7/2/2007 7:12:56 AM |

How could I check if it was a bad HD or bad driver? 7/2/2007 7:31:17 AM |

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/IBM-Hitachi-Drive-Fitness-Test.shtml
It will work on a non Hitachi drive.
Post with the results
If it's Green, its alright...but if it turns red, right down the code.
Choose the advance test. 7/2/2007 7:55:25 AM |

I've actually had the same issue with a laptop of mine. It seems like it was a software issue and not a hardware issue though. I was experiencing the same exact problems as you. It was time for me to reformat the laptop anyway, so after a clean install of XP i didn't have the issue anymore. I may be wrong, but it seemed like a software issue to me. Something got corrupted in XP maybe. If all else fails i'd try a repair console if you have the XP disk, or a clean install of xp if the problem continues.

I was trying to avoid reformatting at all costs because of all the stuff I have on my current hard drive. When I get home I'll run that ^^ test. If I get a green light then I'll just try and repair XP. If that doesn't work, then I think I'll have to reformat

^Yeah if it comes down to that you can run xp in safe mode with networking and grab all your files through a network. Then reformat and you'll still have all your files. It's always good to reformat every so often anyway. 7/2/2007 3:57:24 PM |

You said you didn't stay in safe mode long enough to see if the problem happened. Try that first, stay in safe mode for a couple of hours (or however long it takes to duplicate the problem) if everything is okay in safe mode it's not your hardware. 7/2/2007 5:25:55 PM |
WolfAce All American 6458 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah cycling safe mode would never fix anything more than restarting would, the whole point of booting to safe mode was to see if you could recreate the problem there. Safe Mode has a lot of things disabled so you could potentially rule things out or not. 7/2/2007 5:40:40 PM |

Ok, clearly you're infected, being hi-jacked, or having hardware conflicts ...
Download Process Explorer (google it) ...
Take particular notice to whichever process is consuming more than 25%+ of your processor ...
Regardless, kill every process one-by-one that is not created by Microsoft Corporation. As soon as you see the processor usage drop dramatically and stay down, that's your problem. Track it down and remove it completely. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, post back here for more instructions.
