Does any one know anything about the area? I have a job offer down there-the office would be downtown but I would also be doing some work at Ft. Benning as well. I'm going to visit, but was wanting to know specifically if downtown was any good-what the night life is like (if any at all), what kind of other stuff there was to do, and if there were young people aside from those in the army crowd. 6/15/2007 11:35:10 PM |

Well, it's not as bad as Fayetteville, but it's still a military town. On the plus side Auburn is close by (college town) and Atlanta isn't an unreasonable distance away. Of course, there are "young people" but not a lot of young professionals. 6/15/2007 11:50:53 PM |

Thanks! Yeah, I'm from Atlanta, and my brother went to Auburn so I'm familiar with the surrounding areas, but just not Columbus itself. 6/15/2007 11:55:22 PM |

I've been there a handful of times. Columbus is kinda in the middle of no where. If you don't mind driving to go places, then its up your alley. It's not paradise...but it can't be any worse than Macon 6/16/2007 2:23:28 PM |

I'm sorry, but it is a shithole. We camped down there one weekend and only saw pawn shops, laundromats and accidentally wandered over the state line to Phenix City. Agh.
Fayetteville is better. At least the beach is closer by. Or Raleigh. Depending on which way you want to go. 6/16/2007 4:09:58 PM |

Yeah, I went and visited today and didn't like it.
How about Columbia, SC? That may be another option, seems better with it being a college town and all, plus I know some more people in the area. 6/17/2007 12:27:10 AM |

I was down there for basic and all I did was march around for 14 weeks on Sand Hill on Benning. It sucked and I have a negative opinion of the whole place.... but my brother is stationed down there and he thinks it's not too bad. They go off post everyday and seem to enjoy themselves, and Atlanta is close enough.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that what you brother in the Army considers a good time, might, just slightly, differ from the OP.... 6/18/2007 4:03:35 PM |
