I like country music, grew up around it so it was hard to avoid it.

And, just in case you were trying to find out more about a couple of those songs.

Josh Turner - Me And God
Not sure about "anyways", but I believe the "uh...sweet tea", might be...
Billy Currington - "Good Directions"

i have a very broad taste in music but I do not like country. The music is thoughtless a 5 year old could create half the lyrics. Some red neck guy singing about riding his tractor, his glory days playing football and falling in love, or how "great" is boring podunk small town is. The songs lack much artistic talent and the lyrics are bland. I guess you need to create simple songs for all the stupid people to understand. I laughed one day on the highway when some dude had the bumper sticker "country music supports inbreeding."

Every time i hear about a country band coming to raleigh I want to show up the concert. Run on stage burn the guy's retarded cowboy hat and break whatever instrument violin/banjo that gives country music that cliche' annoying "country twang" that every country song has.

At least rappers think of catchy lyrics, make up new slang (unknowning to them a form of metaphor) to represent doing what gangsters do, rap really fast, and invoke a lot more talent in order to perform a lot of there music.

One time i went to play power hour at a friends place; little did i know they planned on playing "country power hour." That 60 mins was fucking torture.

What are the prerequisites to be classified as country, and if things like garth brooks isn't country what genre of music is it?

yeah most new country sucks, and is poppy crap. some of the old stuff though is quite beautiful, soulful and sad. i mean some of it you can hear the pain in the vocals, good stuff. and rap sucks

^^because certainly there can be no parallels between mainstream country vs. "good" country and mainstream rap vs. "good" rap.

as far as country not having intelligent lyrics, I can see that in some songs, but others have great lyrics. see: Sunday Morning Coming Down

I like country music -- actually played in a country/rock band (ala Cross Canadian Ragweed) for a while.

Whoever said the lyrics are lacking in country must not be listening. True -- they're not the most intellectually stimulating songs, and the song arranagements are incredibly simple --- but well-written songs don't have to be complex.

To me, good lyrics are all about connecting to the listener. You can tell the simplest story, make the simplest observation, or sing the simplest words, but if they're presented in the right context, they can be extremely moving. That's what country music is all about. Plus the genre has the best hook lines in all of music -- a HELL of a lot better than most of the pop/r&b shit out right now.
