I'm looking to get out of town for the 4th of July, preferably to somewhere along the coast between Nags Head and Charleston, SC other than Myrtle Beach. Anyone have any suggestions?

Useless trivia, but certainly is appropriate here...Southport has the largest July 4th celebration in NC

I'll be in North Myrtle. I kinda like all the fireworks on the beach during the 4th.

The fireworks are excellent in Southport, you could stay in Wilmington then go for the fireworks.

Right now, Southport is in the lead. Does anyone know anything about Charleston on the 4th?

I wasn't aware of a popular tourist destination known as the plague...

Darn near every restaurant in Wilmington was closed before 9pm on the 4th last year... I was a lil bummed. We went down from EI to TI to Wilmington... hung out for the fireworks then went back in reverse.

Ellis Island? Talk about a long haul.

^^It's all the rage. Each car gets a "quarantine" sign for the rearview mirror when they enter town.

It's on a Wednesday so I'll be at work on top of getting holiday pay.

Another vote for Southport here. When I last went, about 10 years ago, the event included a 5K road race, surfing & sand castle contests on nearby Oak Island, a parade of decorated boats/yachts, a street dance with beach music including The Embers, and of course the fireworks. The whole thing has a small-town feel to it; I really enjoyed it.
