there could be tons of reasons:

1. got it as a gift
2. someone else had it didnt want it, so gave it to me for free
3. i bought it without even viewing it because I love spending money on the unknown
4. maybe I love stuff I hate
etc

and its #2 in this particular case, but #4 kind of applies too

It's amazing that this movie feels short at almost 3 hours long.

A friend gave me Scratch and Style Wars to watch. I'll get to them at some point in the next few weeks.

Crumb is cool

just don't watch it with the wrong people, or they're going to think you're a fucking freak

also, a little trivia, Jon Stewart's first date with his wife was going to a showing of Crumb

the more you know...

Crumb is one of my very favorite movies, documentary or otherwise.

I'd like to add Sick, Hated, and Chicken Hawk to this thread. I highly recommend any of those for a stellar first date.

"The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140788/

and maybe

"Blood of the Beasts" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041842/

and then finally

"Land Without Bread" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023037/

Some of my choices have been stolen by people in this thread who I showed them to.

Anyway.

Crumb
Hoop Dreams
DiG!
Spellbound
American Movie
Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll
Chuck Berry's badassery on full display, particularly in the DVD features)
Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Gimme Shelter
(the editing is pure and simple brilliance)
Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of
Smile
Salesman

And somehow I forgot Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows, which IMO is the best doc ever on the professional wrestling business (much better than Beyond the Mat).

It's hard to get on DVD because it was a production of the Canadian government, but you can watch it in its entirety starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDbquF4gan4

oh shit, forgot one of my favorites:

Trekkies

hahahahaha, shit is so fucking funny, I have Trekkies II but its not as good because most of the people in the first one had realized how big of a tool they had been and they werent quite as dorky the second time around.

give a little one sentence description along with the title if you can...

DiG! a.k.a. The Real Napoleon Dynamite

^^^^^Somebody took ENG492 Subversive Film

about fifteen minutes through Land Without Bread I started laughing, and was unable to stop for the rest of it - I kinda felt like a horrible person, but meh, the juxtaposition of homeboy's voice with the images on screen was just unbelievably funny to me at the time.

^^ While that isn't a documentary, I would have to recommend "In the Shadow of the Moon" whenever it is released in theaters (and I imagine it will end up getting a wide release). http://imdb.com/title/tt0925248/ Hands down the best documentary related to space travel. Some of the footage is incredible.

fuschia, i love koyaanisqatsi but how is it a documentary?

also: one that wasn't mentioned that i've always liked is "paradise lost: the child murders at robin hood hills". i saw it on hbo in the 90s. basically how a town needed a scapegoat for a ghastly murder of some kids and they found the kids at the local high school who listened to metallica and wore black to peg it on.

^I watched that doc and it was pretty intense.

Didn't the three that got convicted turn out to be innocent and the father of one of the victims was the real murderer, I don't remember it much its been a while.

Another good doc is Bus 174
