I have a question for all you crazy mac people out there. I have a g4 quicksilver 2002 dual 1ghz and the processor has shiat on me. I also happen to have a 450 mhz G4 processor lying around from a guy whose computer i upgraded. Is is possible for me to swap the 450 into the dead G4? If so is there anything special I need to do? thanks.

Processors rarely "shiat" on people. My money says it's a misdiagnosis.


How did you come to the conclusion that it has died?

Edit: and it looks crispy

Edit2: one of the transistors melted and caught fire. I hooked up a 1.4 ghz that I happen to have up to it and it displays the *looking for OS* message. There is no hardrive so thats not a big deal but its letting off this high pitched whine. I think its the power supply. Does Apple use some weird mac only power supply on these or can I swap in one of my good ones?

hijack- I had an Athlon 64 shiat on me after only a year and a half of use (it definitely was the processor-- I checked it out in a different system). How could this have happened? Could it have been something I did?

Did you build the computer yourself? If you weren't grounded you may have damaged it with static.

I did build it, but I hadn't touched the processor since I had put a new heat sink on it about a year prior to its failure.

It just randomly crapped out while I was typing in word.

Apple computers were not consistent across the board with the processor interconnects. I would say it's very unlikely you could swap them out like that (the dual 1 was a 7447 and the 450 was a plain 7400 revision of the G4), but I also haven't looked in to it.

Just look up some G4 processor upgrades for your computer, and see if it also lists the computer that your friend had as compatible. If it did, it would work. If not, it won't work.

It probably won't work though.

this was an AGP 450 so the processor will fit if thats what your getting at. The 1.4 that I fitted it with is going in place of the 450 so I guess we will see. Still looking for some knowledge on the power supplies.

If it physically fits, you might then want to check to see if there are any jumpers you have to change around.

Also, you should just be able to look at the power supply connector and see if it's a regular ATX.
