Ok, I've got two computers on my network. Both with static IPs. They are both shared. Both running xpPro. I can type in "\\192.168.0.101" or "\\192.168.0.102" and see both computers. But, I CAN"T type "\\name1" or "\\name2" and get access. They both are named under System, and both are in the same workgroup. When I got to the workgroup under Network Places, all I see is the computer I'm on - e.g. if I'm using "name1" under Workgroup Computers I see "name1" and vice versa for "name2"
What's up? I know I'm missing something simple. 6/23/2007 12:07:48 PM |

Probably a dumb question to ask, but what the hell... do you have Client for Microsoft Networks and/or File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks installed? 6/23/2007 4:52:57 PM |

plusdelta, yeah, they both are installed.
aficionado,
it's mostly for my wife - I figured she'd be a lot more comfortable using the computer names instead of remembering the IP addresses
I've been searching around on the internet and I've heard reports that this is a problem that popped up with SP2 (like here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16544), but no word on how to fix it. 6/24/2007 12:18:03 PM |

if you are just sharing files, then just map a network drive and tell her to get to the other files go to z: where z is whatever letter you want
shit i have a n, o, p, and q drive that are just shares from two other computers mapped on my laptop
o and p are a cd and dvd drive
