Anyone there Saturday night? There was a massive fight between Stephen Rhodes' team and Jamey Caudill's team that probably involved 150 people. Stephen Rhodes was eventually arrested after he tried to drive his car backwards down pit road into the crowd. I mean I've seen fights before, but that was the first time I'd seen a driver pulled from his car at gunpoint. 6/25/2007 11:43:49 AM |

i've thought about building a u car or thunder car to run down there. be a fun alternative to derbys, and not much more $$.

In the first race, Rhodes was right behidn Caudill for most of the race, kept tapping him to let him know he was there, finally spun him out. It looked like a low blow at first, but he was truly the faster car and went on to win while Caudill wound up 5th or 6th. In the second race, Rhodes got hung up behind a lap car that ignored the "you're being passed flag", Caudill used the opportunity to spin Rhodes out.
Thirty seconds later, 150 people were going at it next to their haulers and Stephen Rhodes takes his car backwards down pit road, damn near hitting 10-15 people. Thats when the guns came out.
Like I've said, I've seen bloody noses and banged up cars, but nothing like this. I don't feel as cheated out of missing the '79 Daytona 500 now. 6/25/2007 1:22:34 PM |

i think bumping/banging on the track and throwing a few fists from time to time afterwards is a part of circle track racing. driving your car at a crowd of people is not and just plain stupid. he should get the book thrown at him. 6/25/2007 1:29:09 PM |

I agree. I mean, I go to short tracks because the drivers can get a little rough without taking themselves out. Rhodes got hit with a cheap shot, if he'd just pulled his car around the track they might have hooked him up.
Obviously, there was bad blood between these guys from before. 6/25/2007 2:19:40 PM |
