i had an olympus stylus 710 in my back pocket and it fell into the toilet. it's advertised as "weatherproof" although i do understand they don't mean total submersion. i immediately grabbed it after it fell and cleaned it off w/ sanitizing wipes. i've taken the battery and memory card out and after looking in all of it's little ports/doors/whatever it *looks* like it was pretty water tight. i can't tell anything about the buttons or the expanding lens thing.
what do i need to do before i can try turning it on again? i've opened the battery/card door and the little door that covers the usb port, and left them open to dry (even though i did not see water).
and since i know you're wondering, yes the water was clean/unused.

if you have a fan put it in front of the fan for like a day
thats what i would do just to be sure all the water is evaporated 6/25/2007 2:22:48 PM |

the memory card should inherently be safer than the camera (less moving parts) so once that is completely dried off (probably already) i would try and put it in a memory card reader and copy your photos somewhere else just in case
as far as the camera, let it dry completely before you turn it on and hope for the best 6/25/2007 2:27:22 PM |

the card seems dry. i've got a reader but it only does sd, memory stick, and a couple others that aren't xd. the only way i had to get these pictures off was by using the usb cord. my bf has a camera that uses xd though so i might try it in his after work.
this is a pretty new camera too.

open it up as much as possible, then stick it in a bag of (uncooked) rice and stick that in the sun for a day or two.
The rice will absorb the moisture. 6/25/2007 2:31:29 PM |

^ FTW
It will take at least a week to dry. Don't try to turn in on before then.

BTW, you did a really good thing by not trying to turn it on right away.
The longer you wait to try it, the better. 6/25/2007 2:40:09 PM |

okay, so it sat in the fan all afternoon and i've got it in some desiccant (the store bought, non-rice kind). i thought that might work better than rice. 6/25/2007 9:43:29 PM |

it's just basically expensive rice, and you can't eat it when you're finished.

i wouldn't eat rice that's been soaking up toilet water anyway... i had the desiccant already for use in a couple of closets.
good news though, it works!
