My vote: Bouvet Island

Quote :
"Bouvet Island (Norwegian: Bouvetøya, also historically known as Liverpool Island or Lindsay Island) is an uninhabited sub-antarctic volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, south-southwest of the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa). It is a dependent area of Norway and is not subject to the Antarctic Treaty, as it is north of the latitude below which claims are suspended."

Quote :
"Bouvet Island is the most remote island in the world. The nearest land is Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, over 1,600 km (1,000 miles) away to the south, which is itself uninhabited.

It has no ports or harbors, only offshore anchorages, and is difficult to approach. The easiest way is with a helicopter from a ship. The glaciers form a thick ice layer falling in high cliffs into the sea or onto the black beaches of volcanic sand. The 29.6 km (18.4 miles) of coastline are often surrounded by an ice pack. The highest point on the island is called Olavtoppen, whose peak is 780 m (2,559 ft) above sea level. A lava shelf on the island's west coast, which appeared between 1955 and 1958, provides a nesting site for birds.

Because of the harsh climate and ice-bound terrain, vegetation is limited to lichens and mosses. Seals, seabirds and penguins are the only fauna."

Basically, it's a place where like 100 people ever have visited. It would probably be expensive as fuck to get to, since you'd have to charter a boat for the 1050 mile trip from the southern point of Africa.

Wow, and this place offers a cruise for $15,000: http://www.naturalist.co.uk/cruises2008/bouvet.php

Has anyone else noticed the influx of advertisements to cruises in Antarctica? I cannot imagine why on earth someone would go on an antarctic cruise for their vacation.

^^ Yeah pretty ridiculous. You have to zoom out for like 5 minutes before seeing anything, lol.

^ Because it's somewhere unique. It may not be a relaxing "getting away from it all," but you sure as hell are getting away from it all if you go there. Can you imagine standing on that island, it must be humbling to think how far you are from any sort of civilization at that moment.

^ yeah i agree, just the simple fact that it's so far away from humans makes it worth it. If i had money like that to throw around then i'd visit.

To be a little bit more realistic, I would have to pick Yellowstone. Being able to see the animals in their natural habitat is awesome. In fact, after being there and then visiting a zoo makes me so sad. The animals just look so unhappy.

On top of that, it's crazy to think about Yellowstone as a supervolcano. Everytime you go, it could be different, the environment is constantly changing. And....if it was to ever explode, millions of people could die. Just crazy to think about.....especially with it being so close.

yes, we seem to have well established that it is, in fact, a piece of rock sticking slightly above sea level, not in close proximity to any other above-sea level rocks.

I think we should raise money and put in a bid to Norway to purchase it. Then we can sell it to Capital One for $$$$ for their island giveaway promotion.

In terms of tropical areas, I would want to visit the Cocos Islands:

actually, I think it was misplaced and the coordinates were mapped to 6 degrees north of Bouvet Island. In short, I have no idea where this place is.

Just out of curiousity, what is it about tropical islands that make the water clear at the beach? How come some islands have sandy water and some don't? I'd assume its the waves but why wouldn't waves hit the island in some places where it would in others?

water is always clear (unless it's dirty or full of minerals or something)
how blue/green/brown it appears generally depends on how deep it is and what the surface underneath it is. In the picture above, everywhere it is really light blue is probably only a couple feet deep, and has really white, fine-grained sand underneath

Well how come you only ever see it on islands though? Why never at a mainland beach?

tropical/warm water is clear/blue because"

-there is a temperature gradient between water near the surface and deep water
--this causes minerals to circulate to the surface less
---this leads to a poor environment for microorganisms to grow in
----the lack of microorganisms makes the water non-brownish

Another spot, the Tsangpo Gorge in Tibet:

Quote :
"The Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon, or the Tsangpo Gorge in Tibet is the deepest, and possibly longest canyon in the world. The Yarlung Tsangpo River, usually just called "Tsangpo" (meaning "purifier"), originates from Mount Kailash and running east for about 1700 km drains a northern section of the Himalayas before its enters the gorge near Pe, Tibet. The canyon has a length of about 150 miles as the gorge bends around Mount Namcha Barwa (7756 m) and cuts its way through the eastern Himalayan range. Its waters drop from 3,000 m near Pe to about 300 m at the end of the gorge. After this passage the river enters Arunachal Pradesh, India, and eventually becomes the Brahmaputra."

^^ If it's the island I'm thinking of, I know how she got there. She went aboard a charted "explorer" ship. They landed on the island via zodiac. Her's flipped over in the 20 foot seas. She has pictures of her in the water thanks to a fellow passenger. She said the only thing there is a protected bird nesting area and the grave of some long dead explorer. Apparently, to "properly" visit the island (I don't know if it's actually a legal requirement) you have to pour a bottle of scotch over the explorer's grave. That may be a different island. I'll have to ask her when she gets back from who knows what county she's in at the moment. I don't know how she affords all the travel, but I can tell you it can't be from my rent.
