150K for one recruit for Bama, that's some serious cash, and the could never worked out anyway, tough break. Florida has got to be on that list for the 80's. It's funny to see FSU and Miami fans go at it back and forth; pot meet kettle, shake hands etc. 7/15/2007 12:07:54 PM |

I thought that Alabama's football program had NEVER been on probation until this decade. I agree that the SEC (and the old SWC) are big conferences for cheating, but I don't think that the Tide are the worst offenders by far. 7/15/2007 12:20:23 PM |

I'm gonna LMAO when Alabama go 6-6 this year and the Alabama Mafia realizes they can't buy out Sabin's contract.

Reminds me of the cheating my other favorite team Purdue does. They'd cheat, but it would be for crap players. The women's basketball team once got caught for cheating, but all the fans said "Hey, at least when they cheated they made the Final Four!"

Do yall really not remember about the point shaving scandal at ASU bball? That alone puts you in the top ten. I think it was 94ish and the player shaved points off the spread when ASU was big fav's and they would win by <8.
^, Ah, but did Fulmer cooperate with NCAA officials to save his program of being exposed for the "major" infraction in the Albert Means case with Bama???? Seems awful strange a coach would provide some inside information on recruting infractions by another team in conference just to stick it to them, it's pretty understood you don't bring it up because you don't want your backyard being probed (Especially in the SEC), unless of course, something you have to hide will get excused by the NCAA????

^^ and I have explained this before... he didnt bring it up, he was asked about it in another case, while under oath, and he knew the people asking about it knew he knew so he pretty much had to tell... then that testimony was leaked, making it appear he "ratted them out" on purpose. He didnt talk to the NCAA about bama, the NCAA read the court transcript.

Yeah, he was clearly just an unwilling participant
Quote : | " P. Fulmer Assistance Outlined:
Fulmer told Johanningmeier his primary source of information was recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper. According to the summaries, Fulmer provided numerous tips, plus assistance in several other ways:
UT Coach and Tom Culpepper Met at the Hula Bowl initially, where Tom Culpepper said he wanted to help bring down Alabama (most speculate because He was Out of the Loop due to Randy Ross being de-moted as Recruiting Co-ordinator).
With his lawyer's advice, Fulmer secretly recorded 90 minutes of an eight-hour conversation with Culpepper in Chattanooga during The summer of 2000 in which Culpepper discussed information he could provide regarding NCAA rules violations at Alabama.
He said he would try to get Culpepper's phone number for Johanningmeier and later did so.
He persuaded Culpepper to agree to a confidential interview with Johanningmeier.
He provided a phone number for Carl Sledgwick, whom Fulmer said would assist Johanningmeier in getting an interview with the former athletics director of Trezevant High School in Memphis. Fulmer said the former AD could give information on how Logan Young provided a vehicle to Trezevant football coach Lynn Lang in exchange for steering recruit Albert Means to Alabama.
He encouraged Johanningmeier to contact the football coaching staffs at Arkansas, Georgia and Mississippi in regard to Young's recruiting activities on behalf of Alabama.
By the time of Fulmer's May 23 conversation with Johanningmeier, the investigator had already been on the Tennessee campus making inquiries about the Alabama program.
On May 2, Johanningmeier interviewed Richard Locke, the father of former Alabama player Eric Locke, who had transferred from Alabama.
May 23 2000, Phillip Fulmer Alleges in a sworn Statement as a Secret Witness to The NCAA Lead Investigator Rich Johanningmeier of Numerous NCAA Violations by Mike Dubose, Bear Bryant, Shaun Alexander, Ivy Williams, Ronnie Cottrell and the University of Alabama.
In Johanningmeier's Interview summaries, the investigator wrote in all capital letters: "Fulmer should be regarded as a confidential source of information and this Memorandum should not be included in any custodial arrangements that could be made in the future with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa."
According to Johanningmeier's interview summaries, Fulmer said a friend of his who worked with Game Day Centers, a group out of Opelika that Developed condominiums near college football stadiums, had information pertaining to former Alabama running back Shaun Alexander and a Dr. Porch. The friend, according to Fulmer, said Porch's daughter told him "that her family was looking forward to being assigned another Alabama Football student-athlete" after enjoying a close relationship with Alexander. Response To a Local Newspaper on 15-Jan-2004: Sandra Porch Nesmith, an elementary school teacher in Arab and the daughter of Arab physician and long-time Alabama supporter Dr. Ellis Porch Sr., called Fulmer's statement "absolutely absurd." "My daddy has always been very active in the First Baptist Church and our pastor was always looking for ways to get the youth more involved In church," Nesmith said 15Jan04. " Daddy went through the university to get some players to come speak to our church. "Shaun came up with (former Alabama quarterback) John David Phillips and spoke. Shaun spoke a couple of times, including at our fifth-grade D.A.R.E. graduation, and he would come to our house when he did. But daddy was always very careful to ask the people at the university to Make sure nothing was against the rules. "I never said anything about a player being assigned because nothing like that ever happened. That's just a bold-face lie."
Fulmer also told Johanningmeier that Culpepper could provide information to the NCAA on several fronts against Alabama. Some of which are:
-- Arrangements were made to pay Alexander to play his senior season of 1999;
-- Arrangements were made to obtain a fraudulent ACT score for former Tide player Harold James;
-- A person who monitored standardized tests was paid by Cottrell to ensure that prospects being recruited by Alabama would receive qualifying scores;
-- Young paid part of the cost of Cottrell's home and was providing Cottrell with cash payments;
-- Arrangements were made to pay for Santonio Beard, a former Tide player, and Mac Tyler, a former Alabama signee, to attend Milford Academy.
-- Young used casinos in Tunica, Miss., to withdraw sums of untraceable cash to buy football prospects;
-- Young had made payments for seven years to Memphis Melrose High School coach Tim Thompson to deliver football prospects to Alabama;
-- Cottrell was involved in helping obtain Tide signee Michael Gaines' fraudulent ACT score.
-- Arrangements were made to provide a loan to Terri White, the mother of Alabama football player Justin Smiley.

Enlighten me. How is Schellenberger so dirty? The only trouble Miami got into while he was there involved some stuff from Lou Saban's tenure at UM when they were still a door-mat. And the only thing he did there was take recruits on trips to the beach and clubs. Hell, my dad will tell you much worse things Coach LEE CORSO did when he was at Louisville.
Why was Miami ever dirty? Because of a Pell Grant scandal (all under Dennis Erickson's tenure) that was orchestrated by a low-level employee of the athletic department to get scholarships for athletes that were NOT on scholarship at UM. This employee helped falsify applications for Pell Grants in return for a kickback. This guy was running a business behind the university's back and taking advantage of non-scholly student athletes who wanted a scholarship. Even after he had been caught. Also, misrepresenting UM and mishandling federal funds.... and a year's tuition at UM is not cheap. He went to jail. Finally, there was the agent (Mel Levine) that paid (or at least tried to) 5 or 6 UM players in return for them to sign contracts with him when they went to the NFL. This was actually self-reported by UM player, Bennie Blades.
I'm not going to excuse Miami's troubles under Dennis Erickson (the REAL dirty bastard in college football). He let players do what they wanted, didn't enforce any rule, didn't monitor what was going on, and let the program get into trouble. He was also a raging alcoholic. It's one thing to be the "bad-boys" of college football... but being a dirty program is another.
BUT... there was never any pay-to-play like there was in the old days at Notre Dame. Miami doesn't have any "boosters" .... let alone any money like a bigger public school like Bama, UT, Oklahoma, or even NC State. So please spare us any self-righteous crap that Tennessee is some squeaky clean program. SEC schools crank out a gazillion football fanatic alumni each year and have boosters with very deep pockets. Shady shit happens, and probably on the sneak.7/18/2007 1:32:26 AM |
