but it doesn't make it like the original box does it?

is the only advantage to modding this gen to play legal backups?

It lets you play backups and that's pretty much it.

Which would be good if it eats your discs.

I'd be so pissed if it actually did that.

$2 down the drain

even if it is now, you can't be sure it will be in a year...or even a few months.

i have read a decent amount about it now and it seems like someone has developed a fairly secure firmware crack

eh, it's probably not worth it on the 360 since it's so likely to red ring

and if you've got a modded 360, then you'd have to buy a new one

I don't think any of these machines will live past their warranty now

has anyone in here done the green ring mod? You know, where you turn the 360 on and it shows a green circle instead of red?

I can't speak to the safety of using any of the firmware cracks and then going online with them since I've never used Live, however the process itself isn't terrible hard provided you've got the right parts.

You're best off currently if you have a Toshiba-Samsung drive, since they always seem to get firmware releases first.

I've had my 360 modded for over a year now, have taken it apart a whole bunch of times and use it just about every day/every other day and haven't had any issues with it.

Also, it's good to see that FanatiK is a failure at trolling yet again. Some things never change

Someone please give me 5 good games that are worth buying a 360 for (sports games don't count and I've already got guitar hero II on the ps2.) Paycheck coming up and I'd really like to justify buying one.

I didn't send in a receipt and they didn't ask for one, in fact I straight up told them I got it from ebay (mine was already registered under someone elses name).

Since the 360 is less than 3 years old, I think they safely assume that anyone who has one is covered by the 3 year extended warranty.

But if you have opened your box you are SOL, they will ship it back to you still broken.

Gears of War, Call of Duty 2, Burnout Revenge, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Oblivion

The last 4 should be $20 or less if you get them used off of Amazon.

I know, my trolling failure rate is almost as high as the 360's failure rate.

my question: How well do these work as media extenders? For HD, specifically. As far as stutters/hickups, is it solid? hit or miss?"

Are you serious? After all that talk, you're going to buy one? I think you're done here.

do you see the part where I say that I'm thinking of buying one AFTER THE DEFECTIVE ONES ARE OFF THE SHELVES????

Are you actually trying to deny that the 360 in its current hardware rev is a piece of shit?

does anyone know what the actual proble behind the "red ring problem" is? is it fixable?

It's basically a cooling problem.

Since the processors use ball grid arrays, when the machine gets piping hot, the solder actually melts and the contacts get disconnected. I've heard a ghetto-fix is to actually blow heat onto the chips with a blow dryer, in an effort to reheat the solder and hope it melts back into place. I personally wouldn't wanna void the warranty one of these bad boys though, you're very likely going to be needing it eventually.

There are reports of refurbed units coming back with new cooling systems installed. Hopefully they switch to manufacturing them that way soon, so I can think about buying one.

Cuz I really need another video game system.

Then there's also the 'failing dvd drive' problem, and the 'dvd drive that scratches your discs all to hell' problem. But I'll leave those alone for now.

as many stories as i've heard of people having to send back 3 or 4 units, i wouldn't doubt if the refurbs they are currently sending out still have the old cooling

i have a bad feeling over these three years i'll have 3-4 xboxes at least

Did they get suckered into rohs lead free solder or what?

BGA solder joints are used EVERYWHERE. It sounds like they have a complete moron overlooking thier flow profiles.

I wonder if anyone with access to decent equipment has reflown the components. If I ever get access to a red ring unit I would like to put it under an xray machine at work and look at their joints.

it seems they just cheaped out on every single component of the 360.

They probably calculated what the bare minimum amount of solder they could use was, and went with that.

What I really can't believe is that they STILL haven't fixed the manufacturing issues. They HAD to have known about this problem from day one. I know 2 people that camped out for these and one of their machines broke the next day, the other guy's after 1 week. The funny part: when the 1st guy got his 1st replacement, he brought it over b/c he doesn't have an HDTV and wanted to check it out on mine. His 2nd unit red-ringed after about 15 minutes of PGR3.

The new "cheaper" microchips aren't going into the unit for several more months are they? Wasn't it code named "Falcon" or something like that? I can't remember...

hopefully when I sent this one back in about a year I can get an actual new one instead of another crappy one

^Yeah i'm addicted to the Project 64 pc emulator (completely legal, because i have all the original games i use on it). I play Mario Kart 64 waaaaay too much on it. It renders it at 1920 by 1200 with anti-aliasing, and added texture support.

You can actually see distant objects that would normally appear as a blob on a 64 console. Not to mention you're able to buy both wireless ps2 controllers, and wireless 360 controllers for you PC. Whenever my friends and i want to play Mario Kart we just hook my laptop up to any tv, and use 4 ps2 wireless controllers hooked up to the laptop and it's a world better in terms of quality than the original 64 version. You're actually able to make everything out in the game rather than seeing blobs all over the screen.
