Oh yeah, I remember that....
....he changed from Republican to independent right at the beginning of Bush's first term,
however....

Anyone ever changed between Republican and Democrat? governors? mayors?
Could you imagine the POTUS doing this?


(I knew a girl who changed from (R) to (D), but she was never really a Republican in the first place. Rather, her dad forced her to be Republican, and even watched over her shoulder to make sure she voted a straight Republican ticket. The poll workers let him.)

I used to be registered as a big-L Libertarian.

Then I realized they were batshit insane and changed my affiliation to Republican.

In light of the embarrassment known as the North Carolina Republican Party, I'm sorely inclined to change it again to unaffiliated...

^^ even though his record was moderate to liberal... he tipped the balance of power in the senate. That was pretty monumental (although I don't believe it was the only time this had happened)

i'm registered unaffiliated. it seems to be the best for me since i consider myself a moderate and vote conservative on some issues and liberal on others.

I was Rep. changed to I a few years ago, but I'm thinking of changing back to R just to ensure that I'll be able to vote in the R primary.

not sure if you're in NC or not, but unaffiliated voters get to pick which primary they vote in -- you can vote in R or D primaries now, just tell the poll worker when you show up

Jesse Helms switched from Democrat to Republican. Lot's of politicians have done that as the Democrat party began to have less and less Zell Miller Democrats and more and more batwing Nancy Pelosi types.

that's initially what I thought (i am in NC). But I heard that a party can block unaffiliated voters from voting in their primary....Is there any truth to that?

Nope, not at all. Both parties actively court unaffiliateds for their primaries.

it varies from party to party, state to state, and year to year

its up to the state party to determine whether or not unaffiliateds can vote in their primaries. certainly the national party will have input, but its decided on a state by state basis, for each election cycle. i remember one election the republicans allowed indep. to vote in their primary, and then another election they didnt.

i think there is an overriding law that any one person can only vote in one primary... so if you have an option to vote in more than one you have to choose one and only one.

i wish Dole would retire, she got creamed heading up the GOP Senate Election committee or whatever it is called.....she is about as useless as Edwards was....and the other Senator(hell, dont even know his name) is about as useless as her. She will get reelected though, since nobody worth a damn is running against her.
