be warned, most scrap yards will no longer take keg shells unless you can prove ownership, as the deposit you put down on a shell is less than the value of the shell, and the brewers and the like are pursuing criminal chargers against folks who sell kegs as scrap.

how easy are they to fill on your own? Not with beer, but a liquor concoction of some sort.

the ring is a slight PITA to get out, but with a $3.99 pick set from walmart it's very doable.

just make sure to release all the pressure from the keg before you start trying to get it out, otherwise the pressure will be pushing on the ring and you won't be able to get it out...

make sure you aren't standing over the ball if you release the pressure with a screw driver and make sure you do it outside

Also your going to want to get beer cleaner from a store b/c rank old beer will flavor anything you put in there.

We used to make hard lemonade kegs that were really awesome.
