So I am finally transferring my license and plates to NC after all these years.

To obtain an NC driver's license, the DMV site says I need liability insurance with a company licensed to do business in NC. This part is sort of unclear.

Does this mean my out of state current policy, where I am listed as a driver under my parents', satisfies this requirement?

Or do I need to buy insurance coverage with an NC company first?

it means that if your parents insurance company is licensed to sell insurance in NC, you're fine.

ask the insurance company, they'll know.

hmm... i don't remember needing anything like that when i got my NC license, I didn't have a car here at the time though (and I may just not remember). I still drive a car with DE plates. And I don't have insurance through anyone in NC so at most it's what evan said and you'll just have to provide proof or something.

Almost every large/medium company is able to do business in any state (meaning there licensed to do business in NC).

there are specific licenses needed to sell insurance in different states

just like car salesmen have to be licensed, etc.

if you're with one of the big companies (nationwide, allstate, state farm, geico, etc.) then you're set

and in NC, you have to provide proof of insurance to get a license, it's a simple as that.

Make sure when you go that you have something with your name on it. I went with my insurance card that didn't have my name on it (dumb, I know, but I just didn't think about it) because I'm not the owner of the car, and I had to have my insurance company fax over something saying I was listed on the policy.

You might also want to check up on little nit-picky driving laws in NC before you take the test.

^ Not just your name on it, my fiance went last week and they said it needed to have the start/end date of coverage as well. She had the card that had her name on it, but she had to have them fax her a letter. Any national company is fine, you only have to worry if it is some small insurance place that might just be local to your original state of residence.

^ Yeah, she said most of the questions were common sense driving, but she didn't know things like how many points you'd get for certain driving violations. I'd imagine that and alcohol laws would be likely to be on there and would vary from state to state.

Make sure you have something proving your address (lease, utility bill, bank statement, etc) with your name and address printed on it. And something proving your SSN.

^ yeah, those are the same questions I had trouble with. It just skipped my mind, I guess, that I'd have to take a test, so I had no idea how many points you got for various offenses and stuff. And there were a bunch about alcohol laws too, like whether you can lose your license for buying it for someone underage, that I wasn't sure about.

When I came in from WV back to NC, I had to have 2 ins. policies going at once. One from NC, and one for WV.

Once my plate for NC was issued, I called up the WV ins. and cancelled it. You'll also need like a V-9 form or something directly from the ins. company as proof -- the DMV is *REAL* particular about what form they'll take / won't take, so call and make sure you get faxed over the correct one. You're NC insurer should be familiar w/ exactly what form the DMV needs, but mine initially faxed over one that wouldn't work. So be sure the insurer sends over the correct one.

as far as the test goes, this is all you need to know:

the test questions come WORD FOR WORD DIRECTLY from the DMV handbook (that little brochure-size book they have sitting out at every NC DMV office that has all the different colored traffic signs on it).

read that cover to cover the night before the test and you'll be fine. it's only like 50 pages. you can do it.
