Given my recent discovery of the relatively poor health of the motor in my current beater (90 grand marquis) I've been contemplating getting a new pile-o-crap to drive, main requirements are decent mileage (been averaging 22 or so with the big merc.... would like to get into the 30s), decent body, and a/c

There is an 87 accord lx 4-dr at the shop that is destined to be crusher food... it has the carbureted 2.0 and 5 speed, 155xxx miles and decent overall condition, runs good (at least just sitting there) and the a/c is ice cold- downside, it needs a new tranny
i have very little experience with this gen accord- so give me your thoughts and opinions as to whether i should i try to get this for a couple hundred and fix 'er up or get off my lazy ass and give the old merc a half-assed overhaul?

I'd say go for it, 155K isn't anything to worry about on an Accord.

those honda accords were the beginning of the era of super reliable era hondas. they arent even hard on tires, ive seen the cheap pep boys tires last 100k on those things.
