I'm using MS Virtual PC 2007 right now, and have downloaded VMware's free shit. Anything else I should try?
I'm running a PC, btw. 8/12/2007 1:55:32 PM |

Depends on what you are wanting to run (windows on windows, linux on windows, windows on linux, etc..) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_machines
Xen and virtualbox are things you could try (open source). VirtualPC seems to be good... I have hit some problems with developing in it, but if you aren't developing it might serve your needs. I have minimal experience with VMware but lots of people use and like it. 8/12/2007 2:16:17 PM |

Windows on Windows, and Linux on Windows
specifically, Vista on XP, XP on Vista, and possibly Server 2k3 on XP
Linux on XP just for fun's sake 8/12/2007 3:01:12 PM |

what's the main difference between vmware's workstation and server, other than the price? 8/12/2007 5:12:06 PM |

VMWare Server has a remote login console, so you can access your virtual machines even if you dont have VNC or some other remote access to them.
VMWare Workstation has multiple snapshot capability, so you can take snapshots of the OS at various states, and you can also make clones of those snapshots to create new VMs without having to reinstall the virtualized OS.
I'm not sure of the other differences, but those are the main reasons that I use both versions at work. 8/12/2007 8:49:33 PM |

k, next question:
I created a VM in MSVPC07 that had a virtual hd with Vista Ultimate installed on it. I then opened that same VM in VMware server, but it gave me an error message about it being the wrong type of SCSI disk.
I figured I would just go ahead and delete that VM and its associated disk and create a new one, and re-install vista to it from an image.
I seem to have done everything properly, I created a virtual drive in vmware server for the OS to be installed to, but now when I try to install Vista in the virtual machine, it tells me that there arent any drives present. Wtf!
I'd re-build it in MSVPC07, but I've already noticed that VMware server is about 10x faster. 8/12/2007 10:00:15 PM |

I always just use the wizard when creating a new VM in vmware. And yes, it's like 3427832743x faster than vpc, that's why I stopped using vpc. 8/13/2007 1:15:59 AM |

Xen won't help him with the Windows stuff, though.8/13/2007 1:17:42 AM |

^^ right, I would use the VMWare Server wizard to create the VM for Vista Ultimate. I have installed Vista of every flavor with VMWare Server, so it seems to work well for me at least.
Make sure you have the latest version of VMWare Server, v1.03 8/13/2007 10:02:12 AM |
