I can browse the internet without any troubles, but when my browser goes to download anything, my internet connection craps out.
This first happened when I installed Ubuntu-- I could browse without any issues, but the instant I let the OS update any files over the internet, I lost the connection.
For a (maybe?) unrelated reason I reformatted my entire HD, installed XP only, and I'm facing the same problem with windows, too.
I can't even get drivers to potentially remedy things. wtf? 8/15/2007 4:09:49 PM |

Do you have another NIC you could try? If there is a router inbetween you and your modem have you tried a direct connection to the modem? 8/15/2007 4:11:35 PM |

Well, that's complicated.
After reformatting, I couldn't connect at all behind the router, so I tried connecting directly to the modem, which allowed me to get this far.
Which makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm wondering if I screwed something up and compounded my original problem. 8/15/2007 4:18:25 PM |

Could you get to the router's web config when you were connected to it?
I'd say give a different NIC a try connected directly to the modem. If its still funky give your ISP a call and have them test the modem. 8/15/2007 5:32:45 PM |

$15 NIC fixed it. Thanks.
I'm still curious about this, though. Can a network chip on a mobo crap out in stages?
First I experienced connection hiccups under certain circumstances, then occasional total connection loss, then it got to the point where if I dl'ed a torrent or something big like that, I'd be guaranteed a BSOD within 15 minutes.
I reformatted, updated the BIOS, and got brand new drivers for everything on my mobo, so it was definitely the hardware. 8/16/2007 11:37:29 AM |
