I'm looking to move back to Raleigh within the next month or two and would prefer to buy a house or townhouse if i could, though i'd settle for renting a nice apartment if i can't afford the area

my main criteria are: Quiet/private, nice/non-college, not too far away from campus (20min max), price, garage

where are good areas to look at and what price ranges should i expect?

there are lots of quiet and nice places within 20 minutes of campus. the real question is what is your definition of cheap?

also...within 20 minutes of campus is a broad area, do you have a general idea of where you would prefer to live?

i'm trying to stay under $150K if i buy, probably a little less

if i could find someone i could stand to live with i'd be willing to do more

[Edited on August 23, 2007 at 2:51 PM. Reason : anything with the word bentley in it i probably can't afford]

Bexley at Preston Apartments are SUPER nice. Not too expensive. My friend has a 2 bedroom by himself and he pays like almost $800 a month I think....somewhere around there.

[Edited on August 23, 2007 at 6:05 PM. Reason : . Just realized you said relatively close to campus. It would prolly take like 30 in traffic.]

How much space do you need? I saw that Velvet Cloak Inn on Hillsboro St. has started selling some of it's hotel rooms for $65-75k. That would be the heat if I were a college student again. They're small though.

gorman crossings is a bit too close to campus

I'm using the 1bd/1ba apartment i had at The Summit as the minimum of how close to campus i want to get and how nice i want a place to be

i don't need too much space: 1000-1400sq. ft. w/ a single garage would be fine

^Cary Park (has condos 100+ some have covered parking, not garages) Amberly (like 160-170k but have VERY VERY small 1 car garages) for townhouses, they have carriage houses at Courtney Reserve at Cary Park not sure of the rent but its like 1000 sq ft with a one car garage...all off carpenter fire station.

If somehow you DO find a place that has all that, rest assured no spots are open.

I searched for a whole year last year for the exact same criteria you are searching for and I found...

... *crickets chirping* ...

... nothing. So I settled for something in a mildly quiet neighborhood, under 150K, but no garage, and yet less than 20 minutes from campus. You're going to have to compromise.

Yup. My bf bought a house near Timber and 70. ~15 minute commute, though I've made it from our driveway to the Venture parking deck in 9 minutes

If you're going to buy, it'd be rather short-sighted to exclude garner. I also know two other programmers who recently bought places down here by us.

You can try in the Pine Winds subdivision. It's still technically Raleigh, but it's almost Garner. It's off of 401, and only about a 10-15 minute drive to campus, depending on traffic. It's very convenient to a lot of different things. I live in Pine Winds Apartments, and they're quite nice. I know there are townhomes and houses in the neighborhood across the street.

the new plan is to rent for 6 months or so, so that I actually have time to look around for a place to buy

so i'm basically looking for the same thing, except to rent - i'd prefer a townhouse w/ a garage in this instance though

thoughts?

You don't even need to go that far. But Garner certainly is your best bet. I bought a nice smallish house off exit 306 for 155k.

how the hell did this topic, of all things, get about race?

also, i don't need a garage if the townhome is built on a slab (me+weightset=more than i wanna chance floating above a crawlspace)

Plus you're down with Transformers, which is badass. So if you decide to rent and we haven't filled that room, get in touch.

The boyfriend and I are going apartment hunting this weekend and we are each looking for a one bedroom with the same criteria....except no garage. I need a place that is near 40....I like the area near the 401 and 70 split....near South Saunders...at the end of Tryon. Any information on Heather Park, Bryan Woods, or The Links?

I need to stay around 650 or less....and I need dog friendly. He needs cat friendly.

Are there any "college" apartment complexes that are decent?

Thank you

I live about a mile from here, in Pine Winds Apartments. I really like it here. It's VERY quiet. Pet friendly (with deposit) and if you're looking for a 1 bedroom, right in the 600-650 range. You can get vaulted ceilings on the second floor, and they all have wood burning fireplaces. They also have carpeted, screened in porches. As I said, I really like it here so far. They're VERY big apartments. My closet is massive, and so is my room. There's a separate dining room, kitchen and living room. There is also a nicely sized laundry room. Other nice things are the pantry and linen closet and lots of storage space. The window are really big which is nice as well.

I know it sounds like I'm trying to sell the place, but I've just not been happier with any apartments yet. I really recommend you guys come look here.
