Long story short...my normal vet did not catch a very critical issue with my cat's eye and now it has to be removed. (Small bacterial infection my ass).
Anyway...we got a quote from a few places and they say about $600 to have the eye removed. Does anyone know if the NCSU vet school does anything a little cheaper for the more than broke college student? 9/1/2007 8:57:16 PM |

Vet School will be more expensive... everyone is a board certified specialist (a small hospital would have technicians in some of these roles. The Vet School is premium or last resort care. 9/1/2007 11:06:02 PM |

the vet $chool is very "thorough"
if you come to have the eye looked at, they'll want biopsies of any random lumps, several x rays, arterial blood gases, a bronchioalveolar lavage, head CT, and of course recommend dental cleaning and training classes.

dumbass... they are one of the best veterinary hospitals in the world, which is why people have dogs flown in from Belgium, horses from texas, and even fish. It costs a lot because everyone is board certified specialists so it costs a lot to keep them staffed. They are thorough because the hospital is meant for extreme cases. Saying vets are in it for the money has got to be one of the dumbest notions I've come across.9/2/2007 4:31:32 PM |

I have no problem with being thorough. But there's thorough and then there's "lets investigate every single lump and bump on these easy cases so we can justify paying our vets top dollar to treat the difficult ones"

Or they can just fix the one problem you came in for and ignore the tiny little lump which could later turn out to be a later stage mast cell tumor which could have easily been taken care of if a thorough vet had looked at it...
a human doctor with equivalent qualifications and experience probably makes 2-10x as much as a vet, and their customer service is typically a fraction of a Vet's as well9/4/2007 7:59:05 PM |

I would just try to find a place that would do it right and offers a payment plan of some kind. 9/4/2007 8:20:45 PM |
