I constantly get "limited or no connectivity" in both the NCSU and NCSU-guest access points whenever I am in the EB1 atrium/lounge area. Anyone have this issue or does the wifi in my laptop just suck? 9/5/2007 1:25:05 PM |

next time it happens:
start > run > type "cmd" and hit ok
type "ipconfig /all" in the black box and hit enter
paste the output here 9/5/2007 5:55:59 PM |

don't do it!
j/k. that would help us understand what's going on though. it would help us find out if you're getting that ol' 169.254.x.x. IP or one from the server / router / whathaveyou

limited or no connectivity means the connection is set for DHCP, but it timed out before it could get an IP from a DHCP server. This results in the funky 169. address.
I would make sure your drivers are up to date and that you're using the windows wirelesszero service to manage connections instead of some shit 3rd party app. 9/5/2007 7:51:40 PM |

Ok, Windows (XP) found an updated driver for my ethernet controller but not by wireless adapter and I do use the windows wireless service to manage connections. Next time I am in the atrium and it happens I'll post back in this thread with the information you need (though that might be a few days). Thanks guys! 9/5/2007 10:43:25 PM |

I thought it was a trap.
Assuming hdstewar has registered his laptop's MAC address with NOMAD, when he pastes his ipconfig/all, other ppl can simply change their MAC address under "Properties" for their NIC and log onto the network as his account.

Shaggy speaks the truth. DHCP is not issuing you an IP address, so your getting the internal Windows IP displayed. If it doesn't work after that, when you get to the Atrium go to the command line and run iponfig -release & then ipconfig -renew. If that doesn't work with upgraded drivers and using Windows to manage your wireless connection, then you made need to put in a call to tech support. But at the atrium, try what I said, or you can just do the repair connection option and see what happens that way. 9/6/2007 8:17:10 AM |

no, CCA was updated right before i left to prevent MAC spoofing. you won't even get a dhcp lease if you try. good try though.9/7/2007 1:14:49 AM |

I do hit repair but it just "repairs" itself back to the same crappy situation most of the time...either that or it fixes it for maybe 10 minutes.9/7/2007 1:29:17 PM |

^^^ My point being that the command line commands don't do anymore than just hitting repair..so if hitting repair doesn't fix it none of the commands are going to either. Anyways, hope you get it figured out. 9/7/2007 4:26:04 PM |

yeah thats not what we were going for
that command line was so we could see her ip configuration to see what's going on
you're thinking of ipconfig /renewall, jackass.9/7/2007 4:46:42 PM |

what else could have been going on, when it does the limited or no connectivity bullshit it isn't getting an ip address from the dhcp server, so please tell me..what would your way have told you other than that?

Ok, it went straight to "limited or no connectivity" after attaching to the NCSU access point and then connected to the NCSU-guest. Now the NCSU-guest access point has that error too

do you have norton internet security or anything gay like that?
oh and you blanked out your mac address... hahahahaha.
p.s. nobody could do anything with that information on ncsu's campus. 9/11/2007 10:17:00 AM |

No norton internet security...all I have is the Symantec Antivirus from school and ZoneAlarm. This is the ONLY room on campus that gives me any issues...as soon as I walk into a classroom my internet works fine. 9/11/2007 10:23:56 AM |

Perhaps the radio is turned off? Is there a switch on your laptop anywhere for turning the wireless on/off, or a Fn + some key to do that? I know on Lenovo laptops it's usually Fn + F2, but don't recall for other manufacturers.
Though I suppose you wouldn't be seeing ncsu or ncsu-guest if the radio was turned off, but hell, worth a shot. 9/11/2007 10:27:26 AM |

There is a switch, but trust me...it's on. It's not that I can't find the wireless networks, it's that as soon as I connect to NCSU or NCSU-guest in the atrium I get "little or no connectivity" and can't do jack.

please, tell me you've tried this with ZoneAlarm disabled. That software is notorious for jacking up internet connections. If it still doesn't work after disabling ZoneAlarm call the helpdesk. And yeah, theres no way you'd get "limited or no connectivity" if the wireless switch was off. gl.9/11/2007 10:47:57 AM |
