From UNC's scout site.
no, they are not very very good teams. LSU is a very good team. VT is a decent team. All teams in NC rank from horrible to "need more time to develop."
I wish I knew more about what a team can learn between games in practice. And what kind of improvement we should look for. I just never played football, so I don't know how teams develop really.9/9/2007 12:23:02 PM |

UNC and ECU didnt look bad
i was at the game
the QB for ECU now Pinkney is nasty, he was yards shy of a record at ECU. First time they have beat them since 75 I was hangin around the guys on that team last night.
as for Yates, kid can launch a deep ball, and UNC screen plays are incredible. They have tremendous execution on them and Their blocking is genius.
ECU would have blown them out had their kicker been on par until the last play. ECUs defense is good, rel good except they overpersue and then the screen is their weakness. 9/9/2007 12:34:35 PM |

^ I was there too. Great game.
Here was my review last night in another thread:
Quote : | " Just got back from the ECU-UNC game. Atmosphere was awesome the whole game. Sellout of 43000+.
UNC was burning ECU's secondary. All their touchdowns except for a punt return were off the long ball. 5 and a half minutes in UNC had 10 points off of two long balls, just as many points as VT's offense had at home in 60 minutes last week. I turned around to my dad and told him that VT was going to get killed tonight by LSU. Looks like I was right.
Very open game for both offenses. UNC's QB Yates is really good. He could throw the ball on the money deep. ECU has a porous secondary that we can take advantage of if Beck progresses well before we play them. ECU's QB Pinkney played much more intelligently than he did last week. I heard his numbers postgame and it was like a seasoned veteran. He dumped the ball for the open screen when he could, he got rid of the ball when he needed to.
Twice I thought the game was going away and UNC would win. When it was 17-7 in the 2nd quarter for Carolina and when it was 31-31 late and Carolina was driving after the missed FG.
ECU was helped that they had no turnovers, and I think UNC had something like three. ECU's kicker...dear Lord. He was wide left, hit the left FG post, and wide right from 30-40 yards. Both teams' special teams were absolute crap. ECU wound up 2/5 on FG, and let Carolina run back a punt for a TD. Carolina had an onside kick recovery called back for offsides, missed an extra point, they suck on kickoffs, and botched a potential game-winning FG late that gave ECU the ball at midfield.
Funny story at the end of the game. 2 seconds left and ECU's kicker is on to win. He'd already missed three at this point so I just said to everyone "HAVE FAITH IN THE KICKER!" Then UNC called a timeout to ice him. My dad tells me "I don't think you can ice him, he's already as cold as he's going to get." Nails it through the uprights and stadium goes nuts. The goalposts were not taken down by the fans. The stadium crew took them down on their own very quickly. First time ECU had beaten UNC in 35 years.
Postgame, I heard on the radio that Skip Holtz before the game-winning kick told his kicker: "Why did the head coach go to the bank? To get his quarterback." The kicker just looked at him dumbfounded. Interesting way to calm your kicker when he's trying to win the game.
If State's on their game, we can beat both of them I think. But we have to do much better on offense.
I was sitting next to the UNC fans and band. Good thing as I'll be near the State fans to cheer with them when they come in October. Jerry Stackhouse walked by me and sat with the UNC fans in the 2nd quarter." |

I was very impressed with UNC. Once Butch gets a few athletes in there they are going to be an upper division team in the ACC. Very well coached on both sides of the ball, but just not enough talent to win consistently this year.
ECU will certainly be in a bowl game and has the talent to win C-USA imo. I think they beat VT (who is overrated still at 17.. they have literally no offense) if that QB doesn't make that one horrible decision. 9/10/2007 3:01:49 PM |

I was to that game. Great ending, but the crowd there put me to sleep until around the fourth quarter. ECU talks about year in and year out how bad they want to play UNC and NC State at home and they don't even fill a stadium that holds 48,000. I think final attendance was around 43,000. However, I'm sure it will be filled for us. I did get to see one guy get tazered before the game. That was AWESOME, maybe the highlight of the game. I don't care how good the ECU D played against VT and UNC against JMU. You could definitely tell it was two young secondaries out there. UNC was able to get to the outside quite a bit with little swing passes (not sure why they didn't run it more). ECU does have a decent D-line. They have one stud that was all over the place. ECU's Patrick Pinkney looked very good. Great stuff UNC lost, but I was hoping for a tie or that both teams would get disqualified and both get tagged with a loss. 9/10/2007 6:23:56 PM |

Where were you sitting, Farmville? The crowd was great, at least in my area and I was not around the students. I was in season-ticket holder land and I had to stand for all of the game, which is a good thing. If I try to do that at State games I have 60-year-old snots yell at me from behind to sit down.
You need to get better seats.
And where were the 4500 empties at too (genuine question)? I maybe saw 1000 or so empty in the corners tops.

^and what's funny is that they suspended their starting QB for one game after a DUI charge, everyone got upset that it was only a one game suspension, the second stringer proves himself during that one game, and the starting QB finds himself riding the bench for the rest of the year/career. 9/11/2007 7:33:35 AM |

^^Kass was the front-runner prior to the start of the season, but was really not too much better then the other 3(Clay, Harris and Pinkney). A blessing in disguise for the Pirates. Harris can now be used as a wide out and he can also returns punts.
I'm pretty sure that Pinkney is a Jr and not a freshmen.
UNC looks GOOD. They looked better then Va Tech, ECU beat themselves in the Va Tech loss. 9/11/2007 10:29:03 AM |

that game was sold out dude. the stadium doesn't hold 48k it is more like 44 or 45k. the crowd was the best part about going to that game. it was nuts 9/11/2007 1:50:04 PM |
Edwards New Recruit 44 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah it was a sellout, around 44k. The highest attendance ever at the Fick was around 48k a few years ago. This is because ECU set up bleachers in the endzones. Since then, the NCAA has made rules preventing schools from doing this. So sellout capacity is back down to 44k. 9/11/2007 3:52:07 PM |
BEAVERCHEESE All American 1103 Posts user info edit post |
I was sitting in the corner next to the "Pirate Ship" where ECU takes the field. I could have laid down if I wanted to. A good group of students sitting behind me left at halftime. Just because its soldout does not mean the stadium will be full. For example, guy getting tazered before the game probably did not make it in
Quote : | "You need to get better seats." |
Don't want better seats, only reason I went...girlfriend goes to school there, NCSU was playing away. I figured I'd go to a game where I could watch UNC lose.9/11/2007 9:05:11 PM |

^^ I thought the largest crowd was a little over 52,000 back before the murphy center was built & they have endzone seating in both endzones. They need a new press box...that one they have it like a trailer. 9/12/2007 12:38:54 PM |
