Literally came down to the last lap, fuel being an issue, one guy ran out of fuel with 1/8 of the last lap left and got passed for the win. Damn. That is as close as you can get.

Wow. Dario Franchitti wins the Indy 500 and the Championship literally in the last 1/4 mile of the season
